System Soundbar - Toronto closing January 1st

This coming NYE will mark the end of an era for the Toronto dance music scene as System Soundbar will be undergoing an ownership change that will shift the focus of the club from the underground to a more mainstream direction. System has been a staple in the T.O. entertainment district for over seven years, quite an incredible run for such a competitive territory.

A huge list of international talents, throughout the entire range of electronic music genres, has graced the System decks. System hosted the Toronto / Canadian debut of most of these DJs / producers and was one venue that definitely never, ever sold out. The club was my home away from home for the past six years and will be sorely missed by the entire bringthebeats crew.

There will be a series of very special events leading up to the closing party on NYE featuring Danny Howells and Brad Copeland. Brad will also spin alongside Sander Kleinenberg next Friday November 25th. Check the Canadian Parties / Events section in the coming week for complete details on all the closing parties.

That's suprising. I thought they were doing really well. Heard they have some tough bouncers, but that's about it.

honestly, toronto is somewhat thriving despite this news. as mentioned, 7yrs in this market is an eternity and i think it was just time to move on. the system owners were from windsor and i think it was becoming increasingly difficult to operate from such a distance.

plus, the underground scene is not the most profitable. mainstream hip hop and top 40 clubs make huge money in this city, even though there are a ton of them.

nevertheless, the guvernment complex, footwork, boa-redux, republic, 270 spadina (the old boa space), as well as many other small venues and one-off clubs (i.e. the docks) are still promoting the underground scene. and word has it that another top of the line venue will be on its way in 2006.

system closing, as when industry closed, is just a sign of the times. its time to move onto new spaces, new directions and a new vibe.

That's some terrible news. Hopefully, be able to make it to some parties before NYE. Had some of the best times at System. Unreal. You just dont see these things happening.

Sad news indeed but no real surprise for anyone who was paying attention to what the club has been up to...or not up to these past 6 months or so. They lost focus some time ago and couldn't really compete with the new clubs in the city who really understand the clientele they want to market to. As soon as they started the foam parties for the university crew on their off nights you had to know the end was near. I will miss the space and remember fondly some of the sets I was part of.

System Rocks... Question I am starting to panic all of a sudden.. where am I going to see Luke Fair now?? honestly?

Tell Luke to come down to the "Boom Boom Room" used to be the old blast where Luke came down a couple times.. there are new owners now.

this really is too bad. Ive had some of my best times partying at system and tons of great memories. Sadly I wont be able to make any of the remaining parties but some of the best parties I can remember happened the past few years at system. Digweed with Copeland, Danny Howells GU027 party was insane, JZ with Luke Fair were some of the best I was able to attend. But the thing that im going to miss the most about the closing is the Luke Fair nights. EVERYTIME I went Luke impressed me more and more, that was the only place i wanted to see him spin was System in TO, he seemed too comfortable back there.
On another note I really want to thank Gregor for everything he has done in promoting system and always helping out those of us who just wanted to see a great dj and party. respect and thank you.
                          cheers
                          Enjoy

huh??? so surprised that such a post comes from you. not sure how we've lost focus when all the bookings have continued to been in conjunction with the guvernment, the longest lasting and most successful underground venue in north america. guest nights might have been more infrequent, but i don't think a loss of focus is accurate. and please stress that the foam parties were on mondays (off night). as i said before... the club never sold out.
