^ yeah man, boston components kickass! i love em.

    ^
    ^
from what ive heard, 12" 's are the all-around best as far as quality sound. 10's and 18's i hear arent as great as far as going for quality, those like to just push total lows.(supposedly).

And yeah man, one thing ive found out is, if you want the great sound you want (especially dealing with car audio) your gonna have to dish out some bucks. cause trust me, if you buy the "lower class" shit your gonna want it even better in about a month or two. so why not go all out the first time and save yourself the cash later. Thats what i did. I had been in so many cars with bangin systems and would always ask what they have in em.
so i went and bought the best i could, and im more than happy now.

but hey, its all in what your EARS want. whatever suits them thangs, go for it brotha

Dont have any upgrade currently, but on my previos car I had a Bazooka 8in 200w self amplified bass tube. Very cheap and doesnt take up minimal space. probly not what ur looking for but thats what i did when i was younger. with good speakers, this combo was descent.

I have 1 elemental 12" sub and it sounds better than most cars I've been in imo. I promise you won't be disappointed... just promise me you don't go buy JLs. that's like buying a sony stereo. or an ipod for an mp3 player. or a toshiba computer. or Always Save instead of Campbells. you get the idea.

yeah i'd go with JL audio... they have always been regarded one of the the best subwoofer makers out there. i currently have 1 10" JL sub in a stealthbox and that bumps my truck something rediculous. clean, accurate, tight bass. i used to have 2 12" MTX's... and those were unbelievable..sounded so clean even at high SPL's. i think you'd be happy with one of those two.
i reject your reality, and substitute my own.

You've almost convinced me to check these out. The problem is nobody carries them around here, so I can't actually go and listen to them before buying. And you still haven't answered the question about why you dislike JL so much. Is it their asking price or have you heard the W6 or W7 models and they honestly sound like the poop to you? Every car audio review mag/website has given them extraordinary reviews. Maybe they're all in JL's pocket. Who knows?

Btw...I watched the excursion video on the Elemental Designs website...pretty freakin cool looking. Not only did they have a very lengthy excursion, but they looked very responsive to the signal being administered, which could possibly serve as an optical measure of reaction time. Can these subs keep up with many different ranges of frequencies simultaneously while still maintaining great sound quality? Much of the progressive music we listen to has very elaborate patterns in the low end frequencies, so the subwoofer I choose must be able to keep up with precision at all times.

                Thanks for your continued assistance!

usually when people say JL sucks it's because they can't afford it.

the JL amplifier line is also pretty decent as well.

going wrong with one is almost impossible.

Yes, it is very nice indeed, but I'm like most people and can't bring myself to paying $700 for one subwoofer. I am however interested in the W6 which is $350. I'm going to a specialty shop later today to get a first hand test of one. I want to hear what all the hype is about. Maybe they'll have a W3 in stock as well. They're not as pricey, but still handle 300 rms which should be more than sufficient for the type of application I'm searching for. I don't mind paying a little extra if the true quality is there. Like I said though, I'm in search of audiophile quality sound in my car. I have a 1hr total trip cummute to work each day and I would like for it to be as sublime as possible, if you know what I mean.

I haven't listened to the JL W6 or W7 models... after researching everything, i chose the Elemental. My buddies buy elementals based on the sound of my car, but remember they aren't comparing it swide-by-side with a JL sub.

Elemental Designs has awesome customer service imo. I have a edesign sub and an edesign amp (aka Avionixx) and ordered both from their website. after a year of use I fried my amp... my fault, not theirs. long story short I didn't mount my amp well enough to my car, causing the power cable to break free from the amp while turning a sharp corner. result was a non-working amp because I cut corners during the install... the amp had was fried big-time. even the casing was fried. I contacted them and told them the amp quit working, and sent it to them expecting to have to purchase a new one due to the obvious electricity zaps scattered around the case... the replaced all parts in the amp for free, when the problem was obviously my fault. +1 imo

I'm trying to find sources on the net that can give an objective opinion on it compared to JL... not sure if this means anything to you, but if you go to http://caraudio.com and scroll down one page, you'll see a weekly poll on the right-hand side. "Which subwoofer brand sounds best?" At the time I took the poll, there were 3979 total votes (this week), with elemental holding the highest vote at 31% (1215 votes) and JL in the lowest third at 8% (335 votes).

according to the poll, quality lines up in this order: MTX, Sony, Alpine, JL, Audiobahn, MB Quart, Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Elemental Designs...

all I know is I had two old kicker 12s that I wanted to replace when I bought this one from edesignaudio. I quickly realized that it hits much harder and lower than the two others. I'm using a custom-made ported box that was recommended on edesignaudio's site. you can download the pdf schematics if you decide to build it.

I'll post objective reviews between the two if I find some... imo JL is the iPod of mp3 players. expensive only because of the name and marketing, and lacking in quality compared to most other competitors.

                        Re: Car Subwoofer Suggestions?

So I went and listened to the w6 and w7 subs last night. Hype indeed. They sounded just as boomy as the others and had only slightly better overall SQ. They certainly didn't sound good enough to justify all that extra $. So for now, I've decided to upgrade my components up front and 6x9s in the rear deck. Maybe I'll get a small amp for the 6x9s. Hopefully one day soon I'll find the sub quality sound that I'm looking for.

Actually, I did find that excellent subwoofer sound at the specialty store I went to last night. The subwoofer was made my Focal, a french company and they were asking $950 for a single 10". Grrr....

You know, I can't seem to figure out why it's so easy to locate nice SQ in a home audio system, but it's easier to pull my own teeth out with a pair of pliers than find a nice all around system for my car?

                        Picklemonkey,

I appreciate your research findings. I really want to hear the E-Designs subs now. I must hear them before buying though. So it appears I'm in a bit of a predicament at this point as they have no sales in any shops anywhere. Maybe I'll run into someone who has one in their car for me to listen to. Thanks again for your help man.

i am the epitome of an audiophile and the JL's sound great, that's all i know. i've had kickers and mtx subs in past vehicles and the mtx 7500's sound great as well. i don't believe polls like the one above, because how many people that voted for that have even heard all of the subs in that list in order to make an accurate comparison? they haven't and that's why that means nothing... people become attached to certain brands and swear on them up and down, no matter what the end result maybe.

my advice to you... it's better to have some subs in your car than not at all. your decision to not buy any is foolish and the only person that it hurts is you, beacuse you're the one that wants them but just won't buy any. i would go out and buy some subs and PUT THEM IN YOUR CAR. that is the only way to tell. trying to judge what a speaker sounds like in a store is retarded. and oh yeah, you're definitely not too much of an audiophile for any car audio subwoofer, believe me.
i reject your reality, and substitute my own.
