Garth
Grayhound Records
Garth was born in England on the winter solstice 1967. While earning his degree in business, he inadvertently picked up another one in London night life and was first of the notorious Wicked crew to make the move to San Francisco. Inspired by what he had learned about sound system culture amidst the Acid House explosion, he bought himself a set of Technics and instigated the crew?s legendary Full Moon parties Stateside, co-founding Wicked in 1991. 6 years of wild, free monthly outdoor gatherings would set the tone for Northern California's rising House scene and from those heady beginnings Wicked has been credited widely as the catalyst that put San Francisco on the global dance map.
Acquiring a custom-designed Turbosound rig from the UK in 1994, Garth, Jeno, Markie & Thomas established Wicked as a party second to none taking their crazy show on the road touring the major US cities in a restored 1947 Greyhound bus.
They promoted a series of Wicked Guest Sessions, bringing to San Francisco House luminaries Tony Humphries, Little Louis Vega, Chez Damier, Doc Martin, Harvey, DJ Pierre, Roger Sanchez, Francois K, Stacey Pullen, Robert Owens, K Alexi & Joe Claussel. Often these were debuts for the City. In 2004 after 13 years as a crew, Wicked disbanded.
Aside from his exploits with Wicked, Garth held a coveted ten year residency with Jeno at Come Unity, one of SF's first and foremost House nights and has played by the bus on the sound system at Reggae on the River each year since 1994. Singing over Garth's dubplates at the bus one year, Mikey Dread called it the best vibe he'd seen outside Jamaica! In fact Garth has been blessed to be featured on the same bill as many music legends - James Brown, Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters, Maceo Parker, P Funk, The Wailers, Bo Diddley, The Roots & Jane's Addiction.
Hitting the studio with ETI he scored global critical acclaim with his breakout anthem 'Twenty Minutes of Disco Glory' a record that went on to sell 25,000 copies over several releases. In 1997 Grayhound licensed 'Open Sesame' a song he co-produced to Gus Van Sant's film 'Speedway Junky'. And in 1999 'Twenty Minutes of Disco Glory' was featured in SF rave flick, 'Groove'
Since then he has produced over 40 records, many of them on his own label Grayhound.
A graduate of Urb Magazine's Next 100 in 1998, Grayhound has released a string of acclaimed singles, and earned a reputation worldwide as one of the west coast's most forward thinking labels. Garth has remixed Tribe Called Quest, Perry Farrell, Faithless, Yabby You & Robbie Shakespeare and many others. He has mixed and compiled albums for Om, NRK, Grayhound & Thrive and has been voted as one of America?s top 50 DJs by BPM & Lotus magazines.
In 2005 Garth & ex-Wicked bandmate Thomas came up with a concept for an occasional loft jam known as Rude Not To. True to form the music is uncompromising and impossible to pigeonhole. First and foremost Garth is a DJ's DJ... a selector if you will. He maintains a busy worldwide tour schedule and has a dedicated fan base as far afield as London's Fabric and Yellow in Tokyo.
