Review 10 / 10
"Jacob Todd?s stunning ?Nothing is Real? for M-Theory won across the board support from an incredibly diverse range of music aficionados and propelled him into the scene?s limelight. Follow ups on 3 Beat Breaks (?The Metaphysics of Paper?) and, more recently, Babylon (?Nevermore?) have cemented his reputation as one of the leading exponents of progressive breaks. Here he joins Seattle-based label Parabolic Records for the release of ?Malta?, a collaboration with Jordan Nafie.
The original mix of ?Malta? is a cracker. A dark four to the floor beat underpins the track with more twisted effects, acidic synths and subtle melodies before we slide into a euphoric breakdown. Later on, breakbeat section marks the beginning of the end as the track begins to wind down to an emotional conclusion.
Crazy prog-housers Jondi (of Jondi & Spesh) team up with Mark Musselman under their Momu guise to provide a remix. Melody is a kept to a minimum but the incredibly tight percussion work gives the track a unique, driving groove. Tripped out, spacey effects screech and sweep their way through the track, at times dominating but never short of complimentary. This is a very solid and original piece of work.
Not to be out-done, label bosses Empath and Eric Paul create a remix that is far mellower in style but equal in terms of quality. The percussion and effects have a more techy-edge to them but the track remains on the right side of progressive. After a solid intro, the track sparks into life. The bassline and staccato drums roll along, punctuated by haunting effects and impeccable percussion work.
To cut a long story short, what we have here are three excellent tracks, all unique in their own special way and each worthy of a lot of respect. Together they form an essential release for any fan of progressive breaks."
