Dude, it's only specific to 'Amercian' football in America! The british broadcaster Sky also calls it's Monday football, sorry 'soccer', show 'Monday Night Football'. You might want to take it up with them.
And about the 'real' football line - there's a can of worms. Which game came first? Which one actually requires more skills in the foot area? Which one is more popular world (that means including counties outside the US) wide?
No offense, I'm a fan of American Football, but I hate ignorant ass comments like that.
None taken, but I still disagree. BTW, the "real" football comment was just a joke to provoke a reaction, which it did , but I'm serious about the rest.
MNF has been running in the states for 30 years, and has deep cultural significance as it is the only free-to-air nation football game each week. Despite baseball's claims to the contrary, football is without a doubt the number one sport in the US. I'm not sure you understand the significance of football in the US (Superbowl Sunday is an unofficial national holiday that is prevelant enough that everyone up to and possibly including nuns fill out betting sheets) or the cultural impact MNF had—it was a sensation when it started and had an impact outside of football itself. It is big enough that I’d wager that you know who Howard Cosell is (original MNF announcer) and even can do an impression of him.
If Sky happens to be calling their show "MNF" then in my eyes that is very obviously playing off our MNF’s brand power and in fact the whole idea is a direct copy (although I will admit that now learning that I see where some confusion could arise). While I won't go so far as to take it up with them, I will not be recognizing it as equivalent anytime soon either. It is fine that you guys do something similar but don't diminish the preeminence of the standard barer with an upstart.
