They do not know what they are doing there anymore. The longer they stay the greater the resistance will be, resulting in the continued destruction of Iraq and more unnecessary deaths of US soldiers.

What other options does the US have?

As for Iraq becoming a breeding ground for 'terrorists'/resistance or an Iranian style theocracy, well it's a little too late and you can thank GWB for that.

George Bush does not want to spread 'freedom or democracy' around the globe. To suggest the opposite is just lunacy or laughable imo .

You cannot spread 'freedom and democracy' using bullets and bombs.
Hey, I'm with you on most counts. I'm no defender of Bush and I don't for a minute believe his rhetoric about freedom and democracy... but he has to pay some lip service to it.

I'm not defending the decision to go into Iraq but the goal was to establish a democratic country that, this is probably hopeful, would cause a domino effect in the Middle East. Who knows if that will happen... Iraq is not a theocracy ? at least not yet.

But if it's left alone the same thing will happen again in 10 years...

There needs to be a withdrawal plan but the Iraqi army is hardly equipped to stabilise the country as it is.

It is a complete mess but leaving it alone isn't going to help.
    Ask me a question...

      Yeah I hear you mate.

It's a terrible mess and I'm afraid things will get alot worse before they get any better.

Right now it seems that a three state solution isn't that unrealistic anymore.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”
      Marcus Tullius Cicero

Re: Iraq --- We're never leaving

i was having a great conversation the other day with this guy who works in our building. he is a Kurd who came here to NYC about 9 years ago. very well educated. he does some contract law with companies in the middle east. he said pretty much what we have all said. yeah, the reasons for going in were BS, but most iraqis needed it. he blames the insurgency for a lot of the problems, not the US, and posed the question ""what happens if in 10 years, iraq is at peace, and a major force of peace in the region? how do you view bush and the war then?""

personally i would have left saddam in power. but honestly, not sarcastically, has any peace ever been acheived with a revolt or violence against those who hold onto the power? the USA, not africa, not europe, not asia, obviously not the middle east. if so, point it out to me. i really cant think of any major time of peace that wasnt preceded by violence against those who sought to exert control over the region without approval
