a professor is talking to his students, when he gets some stones and puts them in a pint glass and fills it to the top.
he asks "is this glass full?"
he tells the students that it isn't, and drops a bunch of pebbles in there, in between the rocks, up to the top, and asks again"now is the glass full?"
he says that it isn't, so he fills the glass to the brim with sand, and asks again "how about now?"
once again he says it is not full, and pours beer in with the stones, pebbles, and sand to the top of the glass.
this is a metaphor for life; the bigger stones represent your family and close friends, the small pebbles represent acquaintances/coworkers/etc, and the sand represents all of the other stuff that fills up your life. but however full your life is - theres always room for beer!
