FAO anyone who's ever promoted/hosted a gig (UK)

    Hi

I've hosted/dj'ed at a few of my own parties here in the UK - nothing special just a few mates at a nightclub, never with the intention of making miney more about just getting to hear some quality tunes in my home town.

Each time I've done it me and my mate have just hired the veneue and its come with the dj equipment i.e. speakers lights etc

However this summer we are hoping to hire out a bit more of an upmarket venue. Lots of promoters hire it out and put on some class nights. However you have to supply your own equipment.

we have the decks etc but no sound equipment. Does anyone know what kind of speakers we'd need, and amp etc, plus other equipment, and how much it would cost?

    Room holds about 200-250 people?

I don't have much experience in this department, but I found this site pretty helpful:

You need to speak to a few of these promoters in your area and ask who was the best at supplying equipment.

You need about a 5k rig with all the gubbins and that should set you back between 2 - £300.

If you need any advice Greg please drop me a line sweetfeet_5@hotmail.com

From running PunchFunk I have a bit of experience that may be of use to you

Find out who the other people in the area use and try to become good friends with the leasing houses/equipment renters.

The upfront advertisted costs for rental on equipement is usually very high but if you get in good with the people they'll get you great prices. It really helps to build a lasting FRIENDLY relationship with the companies.

Also keep in mind various things:
deposits ( which sometimes are very high but usually a mere fraction of the actual costs of the products )
insurance ( you could do without but if you're going to be serious and do tons of parties I recommend it. The place ( club )you are going to use might have a possibility of insurance extension, you could get a private insurance for the equipment, ask the place you're renting from ).

In regards to the equipment itself it's best to know what is the place you are going to be using first because it's difficult to give any recommendations online without any details.
Also don't hesitate to ask for equipment tests at the rental places ( bring your own music !)
The renting place could also give you recommendations but they could try and get you something far superior then your actual needs.

Bass bins for club music are a must and different meds/tweeters
