So, here's a bit of history:

Over 4 years ago, I released my first official mix (done live) titled Render. I got a lot of good feedback from it, and a lot of people have been asking me for the second installment to the point of embarrasment. Back then, I was a newcomer to the decks, and I can say in all humility that that mix turned out very good! No one would've guessed that I had only been mixing only for a few months. As far as mixing, flow, and danceability are concerned, I've been judging all my mixes by the standard set by that first mix, and it's been a difficult one to achieve... until now!

Some of you may know that I love breaks as much anything else I'm into, and I chose that route for this mix. My agenda with the Render series is a straight-forward, highly-danceable presentation of my tastes on a night out. Although, there's a good dose of mentally-pleasing details, this series focuses on the body by allowing me to showcase fresh cutting-edge "club" sounds that'll be appealing to a newcomer as well as the open-minded "technocrat".

With that much-needed background I can move on to this particular mix:

Your constructive criticism is always needed and appreciated.

Covers designed by me. The front cover image was captured from a Winamp visualization plugin while I was listening to this mix.

As you can tell, this mix is not meant to be an "unreleased music snob" showcase. I've mixed a good dose of older tracks in with the new ones, and tried to achieve a good balance. The most difficult feat to achieve in this mix was the orchestration. I have tons of old and new material, but much of it evokes drastically different feelings. So, I had to carefully choose the tracks which complement each other as well the mix as a whole. I hear a lot of mixes where this aspect is ignored or overlooked, and to me, that aspect makes or breaks the feeling of a "mix". Most of the mixing was recorded directly to hard-disk from two Tech 12s and a simple Behringer mixer. Then, it was imported into Ableton Live for minor sound edits.

For those of you who've noticed; Phil K officially gets the credit for the last two tracks' arrangement. I couldn't find any other tracks to fit neatly together like those do. So, I chose to keep a good thing rather than mixing them differently at the cost of damaging this mix's "feel".

Well, enough of my rant. Thanks if you've read this far, and...

    Enjoy the mix!

Re: M?ksha - Render .02 (Latest Mix PROMO)

Disclaimer: Below is a detailed description of the story behind this mix, and I've been meaning to communicate this type of mix for the past 3-4 years. So, please don't whine about the length, just scroll away if you don't wish to read.

The following is some info that I think I should've added in my initial post, and I think it'll make the mix more wholesome to digest if you relish your music like I do.
This mix is intended to communicate the current state of the breakbeat sound as I see it as well as a tribute to the artists who I think have changed the face of "Breaks" as I know it. Within, of course, the constraints of one single CD, and in the context of "dance music". I'm not focusing on experimental bedroom head-music here.
If you pay a little attention, the earlier portion of the mix (first four tracks) is my tribute to the older, 80s breaks sound. Joakim's Come Into My Kitchen starts things off with an 80s electro-breaks sound, and moves into Petter's remix of Echoes which features a new twist on an old familiar sound. Next up, is Mike Monday's rework of the Laid Back classic White Horse. This remix was a must-include for me because I remember being really excited by the 80s original when I was a kid. It has a very simple, catchy little Casio melody that just works! Mike Monday keeps the melody and adds a whole lotta 'crunch"! The last in the line of 80s-tinged tracks is Quivver's remix of Magic's Wand, a Whodini classic that was very popular.
After that, I switch things up with a track that forever changed my view on modern breaks about 4 years ago: Habersham's Body Phunk. This was the first track that renewed my faith in breaks because I had no interest in most of the "nu-skool", "florida", and "funky" breaks. It lacked the innovation and the "attitude" that I could hear in every single Habersham and Phil K production. I further expand that sound by bringing in the Acidic Funktronika.

Finally, I begin to communicate the future of breaks to the listener by bringing in Andy Page's Mr. Rush. This track deserves it's own paragraph.

Mr. Rush is a masterpiece that will sound like a bunch of chaotic, inharmonic nonsense to the untrained ear, but to me it is one of the most immeasurably incredible breaks tracks ever made. Listen to it a thousand times if you don't get it, you will eventually be doing gymnastics in your mind. Guranteed. The best part about it is that Andy Page, being the genius that he is, made it just as "physical" as it is "mental".

With the exception of Dubhead, which is the current sound of popular breaks, the rest of the mix expands on the different facets of the future of breaks according to me. Track 9, 11, and 12 are primarily credited to the highly talented music producers coming out of Australia.
If you were wondering about my absolute definition of the "ATTITUDE" I was talking about, pay attention to the piercing onslaught of swirling effects, and the body-jacking grooves on Nubreed's To Know and Andy Page's Serpent. To Know features a familiar rock-style male vocal in a new, creative fashion and shows that "techno" can be just as big as rock in the context of the mainstream (without getting tastelessly cheesy).
Serpent features a superb guitar solo that makes me feel like a rockstar everytime I hear it. It sounds like Van Halen on a thousand hits of acid.

The last two tracks are the newest ones on the mix, and complete this 76-minute representation of what I'm very proud to call my own signature DJ offering to the music that has given me more happiness than almost anything else in life.

                      Thanks.

109 views so far, and not a single person has PMd or emailed me their thoughts on the mix.

C'mon! You guys can do better than that.

the track selection is pimp... imo anyone who plays the white horse track has a great taste in music. This mix sounds like it could be fucking great... but the audio quality is pretty distorted

You're the only person who has said this. Can you be more specific please?

I've used a maximizer and a mastering EQ on the mix, and the Global Spectrum Analyser shows that the mix sits below 0 db, so I don't see how it is even theoretically distorted. Plus, I'm listening to my mix on very clean studio monitors and it sounds fine to me. Am I missing something?
