So, here's a bit of history:
Over 4 years ago, I released my first official mix (done live) titled Render. I got a lot of good feedback from it, and a lot of people have been asking me for the second installment to the point of embarrasment. Back then, I was a newcomer to the decks, and I can say in all humility that that mix turned out very good! No one would've guessed that I had only been mixing only for a few months. As far as mixing, flow, and danceability are concerned, I've been judging all my mixes by the standard set by that first mix, and it's been a difficult one to achieve... until now!
Some of you may know that I love breaks as much anything else I'm into, and I chose that route for this mix. My agenda with the Render series is a straight-forward, highly-danceable presentation of my tastes on a night out. Although, there's a good dose of mentally-pleasing details, this series focuses on the body by allowing me to showcase fresh cutting-edge "club" sounds that'll be appealing to a newcomer as well as the open-minded "technocrat".
With that much-needed background I can move on to this particular mix:
Your constructive criticism is always needed and appreciated.
Covers designed by me. The front cover image was captured from a Winamp visualization plugin while I was listening to this mix.
As you can tell, this mix is not meant to be an "unreleased music snob" showcase. I've mixed a good dose of older tracks in with the new ones, and tried to achieve a good balance. The most difficult feat to achieve in this mix was the orchestration. I have tons of old and new material, but much of it evokes drastically different feelings. So, I had to carefully choose the tracks which complement each other as well the mix as a whole. I hear a lot of mixes where this aspect is ignored or overlooked, and to me, that aspect makes or breaks the feeling of a "mix". Most of the mixing was recorded directly to hard-disk from two Tech 12s and a simple Behringer mixer. Then, it was imported into Ableton Live for minor sound edits.
For those of you who've noticed; Phil K officially gets the credit for the last two tracks' arrangement. I couldn't find any other tracks to fit neatly together like those do. So, I chose to keep a good thing rather than mixing them differently at the cost of damaging this mix's "feel".
Well, enough of my rant. Thanks if you've read this far, and...
Enjoy the mix!
