I don't know if I'd say that Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring was one of the worst movies ever because the cinematography and effects were spectacular, but:
-character development was non-existent -- if you didn't already care about the lives of dwarves, elves, and hobbits, nothing they did was going to change that. you know a movie has done a bad job developing characters when a main character or two can die and you honestly don't give a rip
-there was no real story to speak of -- get into a battle, walk a few hundred yards, get into another battle, repeat
-it was boring as all hell
