    Sad day in West VA.

only one survivor found in mine

sounds like a very bad situation, first they tell everyone that 12 of 13 have survived then 3 hours later they announced that only one had survived.

Are those the traditional cole mines?? Didn't know they even had those opened these days in the US...

people still mine coal like back in the day? i'm with yao... i didn't even know they had those anymore. sad to see, but this disaster and black lung was the reason i thought they stopped doing traditional mines in the first place.

it may seem archaic that there are coal miners still working their way toward a black lung retirement, but if those jobs were lost i'm sure that people would complain and the towns in those areas would die off. imo. it's not that it is a job, but why hasn't it become safer? from what i've heard those guys only had about an hours worth of oxygen. although such a collapse may be inevitable and a hazard of the occupation you would think that the safety techniques involved would be better than what was shown. sad to hear that in this day and age people feel safer than they did in the past, but it's not always the case.
