Allen & Heath has announced the much sought after XONE:3D Universal DJ Controller is now shipping. The XONE:3D is proudly on display for the NAMM show audience in Anaheim, CA (Booth #6474, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA; January 19-22, 2006). The unique design is the convergence of a high performance DJ mixer, a top spec multi-channel USB soundcard, and a comprehensive MIDI control surface, offering a performance workstation that integrates all the tools of the modern DJ.
The mixer section is derived from the industry-standard Xone:92 and Xone:62 designs, featuring four multi-input stereo channels, 3-band total kill EQ, a comprehensive cue system, two stereo returns, headphone monitor with mix/cue control, and high quality dual rail faders. 3D contains the Xone range's trademark VCF filters, offering low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass selection; resonance and frequency filters; plus there is an assignable LFO with depth control. The master section has two effects sends with pre/post fader selection, and there is a VCA crossfader.
The USB soundcard has eight channels, arranged in stereo pairs, which can operate in two modes - six channels from a PC and two returns, or four channels from a PC and four returns. Using individual professional audio standard 24bit stereo converters with an audio sampling rate of 48 kHz, the card's design guarantees the best possible sound quality from laptops and PCs. The soundcard can be fed from the main mix, FX1, or direct from the channels, and features a SPDIF optical and coaxial interface. Also, the USB connection sends and receives both audio and MIDI data to and from the PC, and can be used to update firmware and set mixer configuration data.
There are dedicated MIDI control sections either side of the mixer, with a total of eight dedicated control faders, 16 rotary controls with centre detent, 10 encoders, 50 switches, and two custom jog wheels with micro switches, which can be mapped for use as navigation controls for DJ software such as Ableton Live and Traktor. Xone:3D can send a total of 105 different MIDI control messages from the dedicated control sections, audio channel faders and crossfader, to the 3D's MIDI out socket and via the USB interface to the PC.
An automatic beat detector synchronises the MIDI clock to the main mix, the FX2 mix buss, or can be disabled to allow the beat to be manually tapped-in. The 3D also has connections for a footswitch controller and a gameport socket for a standard analogue joystick that can also be used as a second MIDI output.
The progressive DJs, Chris Liebing and Richie Hawtin, have been consultants and beta testers during development of the Xone:3D.

Re: anyone lucky enough to go to NAMM this weekend?

yea, I went to namm. it was pretty sweet...

I saw the zone 3d and chatted with the guy who designed it, the 92, and the v6. Pretty cool. It's expensive for sure, but it was the coolest thing I saw at the show, tbh. The reason for that is this: I currently own 2 turntables, but no cdj type stuff. I have been considrering getting a cdj 1000, but honestly, if I get the xone 3d, and traktor, why would I need the cdj's anymore?

Also, I went to the poineer booth, and the guy working there was too busy messing with their crappy traktor type software to even explain how it was suppsed to work.

The funniest booth was buchla, who make modular synths:

man there stuff looked so awesome, so complex and cool. But I asked 2 different people (the people who actually work there designing/building this stuff) and neither of them could get the things to work they are so complicated! Very funny.

It seems every company is trying to get into the business of software dj mixing, but from what I saw, ableton, and traktor are the top choices, the other companies are very far behind, and their interfaces suck IMO..

Numark I think has either a new mixer that controls sofware or software that can emulate turntables, or both, I can't really remember.

The coolest demo I saw was for Logic Pro, by this guy named Phil Jackson or something (I know, no relation). He basically got up there and remixed a song on the fly in about 10 minutes, and it was sounding *amazing*! Very impressive. Logic just looks so awesome to me. I will probably never get to use it though, there are about 100 other things I need to learn first.

Native instruments had an ok booth. They were mostly pushing the traktor3 and guitar rig. None of the developers were there, just the sales people that they advertise for for the hollywood location on their webstire. There was a guy there who does a lot of patches for NI stuff, can't remember his name of the top of my head though. Nice guy.

The access Virus TI is amazing. I would love to buy one.

My current plan/desire is to sell my xone 62, virus b, and Kurzweil k2500xs, (although this will be easier said that done).... and buy a virus ti w/keyboard, and a xone 3d. Damn, though, I would still be spending a lot of money even if I sold all that stuff.

Hmmmm that's all I can think of off the top of my head. My first NAMM show, and overall it was sweet. I think RANE has some traktor type sw too... Of course the steinberg and pro tools stuff was cool, and the waves stuff too..

oh, one booth I like was fxpansion, who makes the dr 008, and also a product called GURU which I wasn't aware of. They make some pretty cool software, and one guy had this sweet midi controller that you hold like some sort of bongo under your arm with a strap, and it has all these pads on it for triggering drums sounds (or whatever I guess)...
