acoustic Treatment for a home studio

im moving into a new house soon and im concerned with good sound quality in my bedroom, low outside noise, and low noise for my roommates i found this link http://arts.ucsc.edu/EMS/Music/tech_.../teces_14.html (from my alma mader by the way) and it seems to make sense to me, anyone have any good links or ideas for what i should really pay attention to?

a lot of different methods to pull of sound isolation. could possibly cost a lot of money as well. your best bet is to look for porus materials that you can easily attach and detach from the walls without messing up the walls. the porus materials will obsorb some of the sound and not bounce it back nearly as much as a typical drywall wall. a cheap solution might be carpet samples or carpet tiles that can usually be found fairly cheaply. the main problem you will always run into and it is stated in the article as well is any openings in the room. windows and doors will always allow more sound than a standard wall, and they are hard to soundproof without sealing yourself up within the room. even a little can go a long way if you are looking to get rid of echo in a room you wouldn't even have to cover all of every wall, but the more you have covered the better it should be.

yea, i was looking around and on ebay and there are some acustic diffusers that i think look good, i need to learn more about "base traps" as i pay more attention to sound quality in gerneal, the more and more i hate shitty bass...

This is my 10'x10' studio.. Auralex on the side walls at monitor height, auralex on the ceiling directly above me, bass traps in front and rear corners, auralex monitor pads and two auralex panels (not scene) for recording vocals in a corner. All together it cost around $300 bucks at a marrs music going out of business sale.... made a HUGE difference...

That is a kick as studio for 300 bucks. Spend the money to buy nice insultation. You will not regret it later.

I totally lucked out when Marrs closed here in Cincinnati. They were just going to "throw away" the auralex that was mounted in the "studio" room where all the monitors, mixers etc were displayed. I bought the remaining "new" stock and they let me have the stuff in that room, almost 75% of my studio, for like $50....

there is some stuff that you can buy that looks like a bunch of yellow pulp in sheets at Home Depot that can do a good job at soundproofing a space. It's not too good to look at but it's cheap and it'll do the job. I know from first hand experience with a band I played with.

Stumbled upon a place in town today with some surplus Auralex. I don't think they know exactly what it is (at least the teenager working didn't).... Not sure how much they have but I can probably get it fairly cheap if anyone is interested....

There's two types of glue... I used a "spray" type that is not permanent. 3M makes some as well as Aurolex and there's some cheap generic stuff as well.... Just make sure you cover everything before you spray the stuff though... Unless you want crusty, tacky glue over EVERYTHING.... The stuff that comes in the tubes is the permanent stuff. A small nail here and there and the spray is the way to go imo. The desk came from Staples about 5 years ago... It's actually two desks. I kept one middle piece and two side pieces and made one desk. The piece that the monitors and computer monitor sit on I just cut and made from the scrap pieces of the other desk I didn't use..
