              Re: Dear Sander Kleinenberg...

He's still got it, but seems to forget it way too much lately and then go and give out the recording... He's defintely gone 3-4 hours straight of incredibly wicked sick shit within the past 5 months or so in NYC, and the NYE set wasn't nearly half as good as some of those nights (and thats a nice set, just wanting to try and illustrate that it's not an indication of his best as of late).

I will agree and am dissapointed with almost all the recorded live mixes from him I've heard from the past year, and I dont have any in my rotation...

but on Feb 19th he's doin an 8 hour set at Crobar and as is the case with every gig of his NYC residency I will be there beginning to end (and will continue to be there every month, so long as his late night/early morning magic gets me giddy with anticipation for the next one (not to mention his "new" partner in crime Nic Fanciulli, they go together so fuckin well..... I wish you guys could experience one of their nights to re-kindle some faith and hope in Mr. K)

And I fully intend on letting him know if the party starts to suck, nicely but firmly with a "What are ya doin man?" For the longest time he was the only DJ that could get away with dropping certain fluffy or kitchsy tracks cause he knew exactly where they could ONLY go and work (and fit/keep the mood/facilitate the flow) but in no way should he confuse that with those tunes being able to carry or define the set EVER! He even bounces his head in the booth differently and doesn't jump up and down like he does when he's bringing his real sound out... Maybe being a new Dad pulls his head into a different mode and he's so busy working shit in his head out that he goes into foggy-autopilot-mode? Whatever it is, it's sporadic yet unfortunately well documented....

I wrote this post in chunks over 5 hours, lol, finally posting now

^^^ over 5 hours? i had wondered why poto hadn't posted in this one yet.

I saw his a couple times in the UK in 2001 and he always blew me away. the times i've seen him within the past couple years not so impressed. i'm not quite ready to knock him down to the levels of teisto and pvd, but i'm not so excited to catch him dj anymore.

i think sander is following in the likes of guys like deep dish. everybody knows what they are capable of doing. everyone was really into them at some point. but they are the point in their careers where financially it wouldn't be smart for them to continue to be "underground". isntead of viewing them as sell outs, or cheezemachines, or w/e. i try to think of them as ambassadors for the scene. I'd much rather see kids starting off with sander k then a trancegod.

                    i agree.

i think his dilemma is the same for many djs that have been giving everything they have to their career over the years: stay underground and cater to the internet junkies and limit your earnings versus making a name for yourself in the mainstream and open doors to a lot more money and opportunity (i.e. remixes, movie scores, etc.). he does have a one year old and i'm sure he doesn't want to spend the rest of her childhood on the road.

be at the right place at the right time and you'll still hear the sander you all say you once loved. crobar would be a good start, i know stereo was for me.

I got faith that he'll win back your heart, or heart of darkness at least... We all stumble at times, and he's way to excited about what he does to not regain his footing...

Anyone think that it seems like he is at his best when he's not thinking so much about putting together a "gimmicky set" and spinning DVD's (which is cool and neat but ultimately distracting him musically I think) and he's just absorbed in making his sound (which seems to flow naturally and best when he's not overthinking it?)

I never really listened to him until this soundbar mix that was here a while ago. I like it...not love it...but like it. There are some tracks on it I can't stand but that doesn't stop me from pressing the forward button on my cd player and getting through that crap and onto the better songs. Overall I dig the mix.

for teh record, im not discounting sander or his skills, im not writing him off either.

Maybe i need to make my way up to nyc to hear him play, that may renew my faith.
