yeah. this article is old. by no means is it a dig at the article tho. very interesting and very true. diggers sells out fabric now. at least that is the impression that i have been given by my british mates. diggers had that fabric cd a year or two ago, so i think fabric crowds may be bigger than she witnessed.
    ... bring the vibe ...

well, it looks like she already knew who Digweed was:

"from clubbing in New York I knew this would be a London night not to miss..."

Since dance music is not overshadowed so much by hip-hop in Europe like it is here in the US, dance music DJs are more common and the demand is probably not so high. Being more a part of mainstream culture in Europe, dance music is also not as "special" like it is here, so people don't treat it as such.

Lots of big clubs in NYC employ DJs who play either a mix of hip-hip/r&b and commercial house/hard house/trance because the average large club crowd is the guido/B&T crowd. Why is this? Well, because people aren't as exposed to dance music here; hence, the uninitiated public has no reference for quality. I think we can all agree that dance music would be ten times more popular if people were exposed to it the way they are commercially to hip-hop/r&b.

So, when a big space finally brings in someone who can play a decent set, people go nuts. It's really refreshing for Americans who are interested in dance music. If Sasha played here every week, it wouldn't be such a big deal.

That said, the whole "DJ worship" thing is bullshit. The people guilty of this are usually the same guido/B&T set that corrupt the NYC scene anyway. That's not the rest of us; we just appreciate it when we can hear some reliably good music in a big club.

If you took the time to read that, I salute you.

interesting you'd say porter instead of someone who actually does it like tenaglia.

nothing against porter, but i think you couldnt help yourself being from boston and all. i've seen him play half empty venues on weekends before.

Re: John Digweed- The European DJ Phenomena. Hype or Hip

In shock, I entered the half-empty mega-club. People were milling about drinking, chatting and dancing, but no one was particularly fixated on John Digweed. There was no "DJ is a God syndrome" where ravers stand in the center of the dance floor mesmerized by the DJs aura and sway back and forth screaming praises at every mix. It took me a while to comprehend the fact that John Digweed was just another DJ in London.
doesn't look half empty to me.

i think her views are jaded. she sounds bitter about something.

Why do Americans empty their bank account each time a European DJ flies over the Atlantic? The answer may lie in the belief that most innovative music comes from Europe. A DJ is only a trendsetter if he's an import. Think about it. In NYC who packs the house a US$40 a head? Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Sasha, Digweed and Carl Cox. Name one American DJ who can sell out a 3000 person venue on a Thursday night?
                        lets think here.

                        1. it's drastically more expensive to bring someone from europe to the united states then bringing in domestic talent. therefore, the cover charge will reflect that.

                        2. the dj's she mentioned gained there stardom at a pivitol point in dance music. all of those djs were involved in events and nights that would shape the future of the scene. does she really fucking think the only reason i like some of the dj's i do is because there not american? is she implying every american has some infatuation with people out side this country like they are some sort of foriegn super dj.

                        3. europe stole dance. we did started it, they took it and made it better.

                        4. american hip hop is big in the uk, is it my belief that the english ONLY likes these guys because they are american? no way. america is where hip hop thrives, naturally american hip hop holds the strongest influence.

                        5. the united states doesn't have a talent that is head and shoulders above the rest. we resent that. we resent soccer because we suck ass and everyone else beats us. so we say fuck it, and look for something different. i believe firmly when america can boast having one of the best talents (and a very marketable person), dance music will pick up again.

her concepts were cutesy at first, but after further review, i'm certain she didn't think about the issues she wrote about fully.
