Other than spybot and adaware does anyone know of any other freeware spy/ad/mal removal software.

I've tried the likes of bazooka and spy sweeper but what are the other ones I know theres a really good one I'm missing.

There's a little program called hijack this that makes a list of all the things that *might* be spywares, mostly values from the registry (IE, windows startup, services). If you're not too experienced or don't know if some program, or registry key is froma a spyware or a normal windows thing, you can use google to search for that, there are a bunch of forums dedicated to help people on those logs.

It's a really good tool, I use it when I have to clean up pc's, although it might be a little high level for some people (it's not a point-click cleaner like s&d or adaware).

Trojan Hunter is like those two, freeware, wouldn't say it's better but the forum on the developer's site has tons of information on adware, spyware, firewalls and the like: http://forum.misec.net/

try adaware... this will keep your registry clean, however, if it's totally riddled with spyware already you may do more damage than good by removing it.

Best method is to format your hard drive, reload all your software (yes, this will take a wihle) and use Mozilla as your browser because IE is constantly being targeted by hackers/spyware peeps. It's got lots of vulnerabilities that Mozilla won't be affected by.

        good luck

If you're like me, and know next to nothing about PC's what is the best thing to free/cheap software to initially get to help diagnose any Spyware on my computer .. I don't want to get rid of anything important that messes up my machine.

I think everybody should AT LEAST try Firefox. You can always uninstall it.

            But I guaranty you wont!

I have spybot and spyware blaster. I also installed the google toolbar and got rid of all the popups.
If you use windows xp go to the control panel and disable the messenger service too.

CWShredder helps on a couple of spyware problems...

BulletProof Software makes a nice one too (it caught a bunch of stuff that Ad-Aware & Spybot didn't)

Go to the Start menu and click on Run... (or press the windows key and R). That should open up a dialog box. Type: services.msc on the Run box and press enter.

Now you're on the Win XP Services config screen, look for a service on thel list called Messenger, double clik on itl. You should be looking at the properties page of this service. There's a drop-down box labeled Startup-Type that has 3 options: Automatic, Manual and Disabled. Choose Disabled (Default value is Automatic) that will stop the service from running every time you boot Windows, now click on the Stop button (it will stop the service because it's already running) now click OK and that's all.

Stopping the messenger service will stop some pop up boxes from appearing on your system, with advertisments/fake sites. It has nothing to do with MSN Messenger, and if you're on a network, disabling it will also stop any messages from other network users/admins from getting to you (they can use email anyway... :P )

If you think this is too difficult or you are too lazy...get the latest English version of XP-Antispy where you can disable (amongst other pretty handy options) the Messenger Services under the menu point "Services" with a mouse click. Direct link (Donationware, free to use but donations are welcome) ---> http://www.xp-antispy.org/download_l...amp;mirrorid=0 (right click and save as). If this server is down or there is a new version available just check http://www.xp-antispy.org for updates.
