we're going to Outback Steakhouse with gift certificates my mom gave us at christmas.
now if that aint romantic i dont know what is. actually, we both agreed on it cos there's no reason to spend a ton of money on useless shit right before wmc.

I used to hate Valentines Day back before I was married because invariably I'd be recently dating someone at the time, and V-Day puts you in the uncomfortable position of trying to figure out what is appropriate when you haven't been dating someone all that long. Do you do anything at all? Do you get a gift? If so, how extravagant?

Now that I'm married, we do something a bit different, and I actually look forward to it now. Valentine's Day is roughly aligned with tax time, so we use it as an opportunity to either get ourselves something nice for the house or do a significant home project we've been putting off rather than exchanging gifts. Three years ago, we got a dog and refinished the sun porch. Two years ago, we got new carpet upstairs. Last year, we bought a new house so that kinda served as our gift to one another. This year, we just got a new king-sized sleigh bed, and will be adding either a plasma TV for the bedroom or having our postage stamp of a front yard landscaped.

Apart from that, though, we just have a nice dinner somewhere -- although not on Valentine's Day proper, on the day before or after -- pop a nice bottle of wine, and leave it at that. So much easier than when I had to wonder what was appropriate...

hah! yeah. I did last year. I'm volunteering again this year, but I only go on tuesdays and thursdays... vday this year is wednesday. I'll be spending it with a girl my own age this year.
