OK, it's taken me nearly a day and half to calm down from this sooooo....
First off I don't want this post to turn into a debate about p2p (we've been over it a million times). Second, I should've and could've avoided this entire situation by keeping my mouth shut. Third, there may have been alcohol and jet lag involved.
OK, so I had the pleasant experience of flying to Mexico City this past weekend. I have a very good friend Victor who lives there who flew me down to headline his birthday party. Along with me there was a DJ from San Antonio and one from Mexico City. I hadn't seen Victor in about three years and was way stoked to hang out with him and his wife. I had a great flight (on Delta, which I NEVER fly) and upon arrival was blown away that he booked me a room at the W Hotel which is in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City (clean, sweet and trendy area). We caught up on life, had a nice dinner and then proceded to the venue. The opening DJ was a young kid from Mexico City who Victor had seen spin as an opener at a few local clubs and really liked him.... solid set. Nice progressive and deep house set. All vinyl and never got above about 125 bpm. The next DJ spun progressive house and was the one from San Antonio. Normally, I like the DJ before me to play a different style of music but it wasn't my birthday and I had no say. Anyway, he starts off with a few classics (Wavy Gravy, some Pole Folder) and then.... wham, it's the new Steve Porter and then the new Thomas Penton and then the new Walsh.... It's hard, bangin and you'd think Porter himself was up there playing.... Now I turn to Victor and ask "Am I the headliner?" cause at this point San Antonio dude has played a lot of my set and things, imo, can't be built much higher than they are now... Victor goes to said DJ and tells him to tone it down which he proceeds not to do.... An hour later it's my turn to hit the booth and my arrival is met with "one more tune" from said San Antonio DJ. After that it's "just one more tune".... and then "I have one more tune"... at which point I eject the "I have one more tune" from the CDJ and tell him he has "no more tunes". Now during this time we've been conversing about music and I ask him where he got his music from. He responds that he downloads his music... much like I do. I asked him where he got the new Penton tune and he says "soulseek". "And how about the new Steve Porter?"... "Soulseek" he says... and so on. I don't say anything.... At the end of the night after my set we're all hanging out and said San Antonio DJ, who at this point I find to be the biggest dickhead on earth, comes into the lounge where we are all hanging out. Now I should state that things from here on out are somewhat fuzzy but I do remember San Antonio DJ mentioning something about a Damian Heck song he's been playing that hasn't been released yet and that he got off of... you guessed it, soulseek. I asked him if he got paid for spinning tonight and he said yes and then, apparently, I went somewhat ballistic about how he's profiting from what he does yet not even buying the music that's making him money blah, blah.... He mentions something to me that it's better than playing the music I play from beatport etc and that he has the freshest music and this and that and then.... well, apparently I acted as if I was slashed behind the knees at my local hockey rink and in my somewhat alcohol altered state jumped the dude, pulled his shirt over his head and pummeled him badly... This morning my friend Victor emailed me and said all is fine and not to worry about what happened. I don't know though... I way overreacted but seriously I was PISSED. So here I type with swollen knuckles and a slightly bruised arm wondering if it was worth it.... And you know what? It was.
