im going to have to disagree here, schism is about speration of people. it was inspired after aenima the band went through a rough time when their former label got brought out by another label and the new label created a TON of legal trouble for the band, so there was a long period of lawyer, court dates, etc. etc. and the bands communication at one time droped to zero. this is noted in the lyrics

"cold silence has a tendacy to atrophy any sense of compassion"
    "between supposed brothers/lovers"

Schism is about falling apart and bringing things back together ("rediscover communication") and comming out stronger.

    * i should note, no tool song is about any *one* thing, but its all in how the person interprets it, i just dont think theres any way schism can be interpreted as a reference to the great schism of the catholic and orthodox churches.

You guys bring up very good points. Before I was a Tool fan I thought all of their songs where about hating yourself and everyone else. As I've gotten more into them I have found that could not be more untrue. The intelligence and multiple meanings that go into their songs and lyrics is astounding.

i read a very compeling argument that the song had religious undertones...i'll have to try and dig it up.

a lot of their songs have very anti-religious lyrics (opiate and eulogy come straight to mind)

again...not true. they are against what has been done in the name of religions and the corruption of the ideals of the religions for personal gain.

i have a live recording from philly in 11-23-96 right before they play "Opiate" where maynard says...

"ever heard of jesus, or buddah, or krishna, or mohammed...any of those guys? they had some pretty good ideas, then their agents started trying to make some money on them and fucked everything up. never trust an agent. this song is about those 'agents' "

I've been looking forward to this for so fvcking long. Can't wait for this one. Or for the innevitable tour that will follow this summer, I haven't seen Tool live in as long as its been since there last album.
