i woke up this morning at about 6:45am with all my smoke alarms going off and a house full of smoke. I immediately jumped out of bed and ran around to see if I could find the source... I have had problems with my washer lately. imo my roommate broke it, but when I approached him to split the cost of fixing it with me he got all defensive. typical tempermental bullshit. i found the source of all the smoke was our washer. apparently my roommate started a load of laundry before he left for work. this is the third time now that we've caught it acting up during the final spin cycle, but the first time that nobody was around to hear the problems before something serious. no fire/flames... I have the bottom of the washer open so the motor is exposed. I originally thought it would be the motor, but there wasn't any smoke coming from it. I have also previously checked the belt on the motor, but it seems fine, too. I opened the lid to the washer and smoke started pouring everywhere. i pulled all clothes out of the washer and threw them on the floor. the top half of the agitator snapped off with them. not broken/snapped, but just snapped as it were made to pop off. the smoke smelled like rubber burning, but there was no flame. The only thing I can think of is the agitator is broken somewhere and isn't locked just spinning against some type of rubber ring in the bottom. I'm going to take the barrel apart tonight... if I can't narrow the problem down further I'm going to have to call Maytag or Sears or something. fuck. that scared the shit out of me. my heart was pumping for 15 minutes afterwards.

Re: my smoke alarms work
Glad to hear you're o.k and it was nothing serious. What a way to wake up! Your roomate should listen to you and split the cost of repair. Hope the rest of your day is less alarming!Awww...I didn't mean A holes, as in "A holes"...I meant it like, as in, my friends.... -

I remember a specific event that he did... I bitched at him and said "stop, you're going to break it" and he got all huffy. later in that same load, it broke. I don't "think" he broke it, I know he did. fuckit. at least he's giving me rent. he's building my retirement fund.Comment

Re: my smoke alarms work
I have the whole thing taken apart and I think I've found the problem. The underside of the belt is covered with some carbon/soon-type shit. the smoke is coming from the belt rubbing against something that isn't moving. Since the motor is obviously turning the belt, I'm assuming the motor is fine. something's wrong with the agitator.. but i can't see what. also defo need a new belt.Comment
