Try this -- use the lasso to do a rough outline of what you want to remove.
With that area still selected, go in with the lasso and add and subtact from the selection by holding down the Shift (Add) and Alt (Subtract) keys while drawing with the lasso.
Once you get the area you want selected, you can do one of two things:
1. if the background is completely uniform, capture the color using the eyedropper tool and just fill in the selection under the "edit" menu.
2. If the background is not uniform, you'll need to use the stamp tool to clone another part of the image and fill it into the selection.
You may need to soften the edge of your selection by feathering it 1 pixel or so, but that's a call you'll have to make after doing it and seeing what the fill looks like.
Two keys:
1. Zoom in a lot, so you're right on top of it and can really get the lines right, and
2. Go slow
