    Over His Head

OK, I'm officially of the opinion that George W. Bush -- not the administration, just the guy -- is in completely over his head. I almost feel bad for him.

What other conclusion could one possibly reach from watching him sit through a briefing that included the following:

"My gut tells me ... this is a bad one and a big one," then-federal disaster chief Michael Brown told the final government-wide briefing the day before Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29.
    and

"I'm concerned about ... their ability to respond to a catastrophe within a catastrophe," Brown told his bosses the afternoon before Katrina made landfall.
...and not ask a single question through the whole thing and reach the conclusion that:
    "We are fully prepared."

This also casts some doubt on Bush's assertions that, "No one could have foreseen that the levees would break." That wasn't just foreseeable, it was specifically discussed, with Bush himself.

This reminds me of those 7 minutes after the second plane hit on 9/11 where Bush just sat there with that dumb ass look on his face that said, "Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into." The primary difference is that following 9/11 he stepped up to the plate, demonstrated some fucking leadership and did this right thing. This time, he went on vacation.

Is it Jan. 2009 yet? Republican, democrat, I don't care -- I'll take anyone new. Please.

if you dont realize that the whole thing was ineptitude on behalf of anyone who had to deal with the city, going back 20 years, then toasty, imma smack ya.

      mayor fucked up the most
      then the govener, FEMA
      past leaders
the levee board who was handling zoning and re development issues rather than the leveies.
the people who disregarded the studies from 92 and 95.

also, what would you want him to do in less than 24 hours? they wouldnt have been able to get more than 2000 national guardsmen assembled in that time if they were lucky.

we know he isnt all there, but dont harp on shit that no president would have been able to handle, or expect. the same thing would have happened if nagin was president.

How about just BE ENGAGED. With 2000+ people missing, Katrina could ultimately have a larger death toll than 9/11. That's not worth cutting his fucking vacation short?

The point is not that Bush could have even really done anything different in terms of saving people or property. FFS, we're talking about a natural disaster of biblical proportions, and there's going to be loss of property and life no matter what anyone does. Nor is the point of this thread to talk about what could or couldn't have been done re Katrina, or to spread the blame -- that's been pretty much fully vetted. The point is basically what the title of the thread said, that he's in completely over his head, that he sat there like a deer in the headlights when he should have been engrossed in helping to unfuck a fucked up situation.

How do you sit and listen to that and not have a single fucking question? It blows me away.

oh no, dont it what i said the wrong way. the homeboy has made himself inept, mainly through who he surrounded himself with (sinister cats who only care about thier agenda). but i am damn glad a bush detractor said this.

if ya listened to kanye west or and uber leftist out there, you would think bush his secretly mother nature and planned to let the leveies break. kanye thinks bush hit the button on the bomb that was secretly placed in the levee when bush was elected.

i just like people telling it how it is. in all aspects. there isnt anything he could have done.

and in regards to the 7 minutes of ""ohshit"" at 9/11. dude, he was in a classroom with children and press. i assume they told him not to flip out and set off a country wide panic, but rather, end the session as quickly as he could, and get to a safe place.

OK, fine. But do this exercise. Look at a clock, and sit there for 7 minutes. It's not a long time, but when you're talking about dead time, just sitting there, it sure seems like it. When you're the president, you ought to be able to find the opportunity in all that time to say, "I'm really sorry, but something has come up that I need to attend to. It was great spending time with you all, and I look forward to the opportunity to see you again some time soon."

Just like that, and you're out of there.

But the troubling thing for me about that time spent sitting there wasn't the time itself -- it was the look on his face. He looked terrified, as if to say, "Oh my God, I've stumbled bass ackwards into the presidency and now someone has gone and attacked us and I don't have a fucking clue what to do." It was not a confidence-inspiring look, it was the look of someone who realized he was in over his head -- hence the comparison to the current situation.

Living in the past = Priceless

Shall we bitch about Reagan and daddy bush too?

Reagan didnt mention the word AIDS in public or to the press once during his presidency... Does that have anything to do with W-Bush's incompitancy and dispicability? Nope, was anyone comparing the two, nope?

Why bring clinton up every five minutes when discussing how the current dumbfuck is dealing with and reacting to current events...? It's not like folks on this board, or this thread more specifically, are suggesting or annoucing that a democrat would be doing everything correctly... stick to the issue and discussion.

Bush took us to war for Haliburton profits. A war which has started a chain reaction in the middle east that will most likely lead to WWIII. But Clinton is evil....

its all a chain. bush is a moron, i have never denied that, and everyone of his cabinet members is openly a blind defender of him and a lot of the time even worse. but the world wasnt at peace the day before bush came into office. there was conflict in isreal, violence in india and pakistan, saddam wasnt even being bothered, and africa was just being talked about. alot of it, is this country's fault. the world hasnt put things behind them. we need to understand that. billy boy bombed people too. and stuck his nose in bosnia which was an islam based conflict. there is a lot more out there than how we fucked up iraq by taking out a dictator who systematically killed millions and destroyed his country's geography so that he could starve out his people because they were from a different sect of islam.

Clinton interviened in Bosnia to stop genocyde. Worthwhile cause IMO. I agree the world has always been a fucked up place, but don't underestimate how much resentment there is in the Muslim world at the US as a direct result of Iraq. Why now all of the sudden does Humas win an election? You can't tell me one has nothing to do with the other.

I fear we have really stirred up a hornet's nest, and it would be so typical of these greedy idiots and their bumbling to not calculate these consequences as we've seen so many times before.

On a CNN show a few weeks back that had view comments, one read:
"Bush's strategy was to make himself look smart by surrounding himself with idiots... So far it hasn't worked."
