    This is real

There is a republican t-shirt website called 0cents that has me still in disbelief as to how it could possibly take itself seriously, yet sadly it does. Please take a moment or two to peruse the t-shirt messages and graphics, I'm curious to see what MS'ers reactions are, even you too Sean.... it's somethin else....

a few examples before you go for yourself...

    are you fucking kidding me?

actually, the data do not support global warming. urban heat effect can account for many warming trends in cities, whereas many rural areas have actually gotten colder. really, the data is all over the place. some areas have gone up, some have gone down.

this is not a republican view, just a scientific one. there is simply not enough data about glaciers to say that they are melting. there are over 150,000 glaciers, of which we have good data on about 80. and glaciers' melting can be caused by other factors more important than air temperature, like air moisture.

also, sea levels are not rising any faster now than they have been for the last 6000 years. it may be hard to believe, but there also has been no increase in severe weather, despite what we may think of hurricane Katrina.

the term "global warming" is really meaningless. the earth's climate is changing constantly; it might be in a warming trend right now, it might not be. to say that "global warming" is going on is, first, not scientifically supported and second, saying nothing about humans' impact on global climate and whether it is negative or positive. it has been suggested that slight warming would even have a net beneficial effect on humanity. But warming is no where near being proven. if anything, this idea loses ground every day.

this is not to say that we should give up environmental restrictions; it is merely to say that global warming is not a scientific doctorine that we should be looking to avoid with our environmental programs. it's not true.

the latest data on global warming is undeniable. 60 Minutes did a story about it 2 weeks ago,

They featured the guy Reagan appointed to study it in the 80s. He said if we stopped polluting tomorrow, we'd stifll be screwed, not to mention continuing at current rates. BTW, the US is by far the biggest contriubutor to green house gases.

                          1. CO2 emissions are trapping the heat. That's a given and we know that.

                          2. Rising temperatures in surrounding areas, specifically metropolitan areas are havens for CO2 emissions, ie: smog.

                          3. Smog/CO2 traps reflected heat and keeps it within our atmosphere

                          3. Water is a resevoir for heat

                          4. Trapped heat filters into the ocean

                          5. As a result, ocean temperatures increase

                          6. Increase in ocean temperatures create more moisture in the air = more hurricanes, aside from that, changes in weather patterns.

                          7. Currents displace warm water with cooler water from the north/south poles

                          8. Side effects include (as reported along the oregon coast and west coast) low-level food chain organisms dying off because warmer waters are not producing the correct feed; increasing number of tropical storms per year; increasing temperatures and record setting temperatures within cities.

Scientific American and Popular Science had a great article about this over summer. I'll see if I can find them. Midway through the beginning of the industrial revolution is where this most likely started as they've said that the carbon molecules have increased almost 2 or 3 fold in a span of 100-120 years.

actually, after reading into it a little more, there's really no point in discussing it. the combination of science, politics, and the unknown concerning this issue is so impenetrable that making a strong conclusion is impossible.

I'll be honest and say that my info came, in part, from the Crichton book, much of which is non-fictional reference and data. If this is now being discounted, so be it; the book was written in '04. But after seeking a little information, I give up. There are so many people with different opinions. It's impossible to tell whether one is politically or scientifically motivated, or just making the wrong conclusions.

I'm all for lowering pollution; fuck industry. But there just seems to be too much complexity to the issue to make an educated platform.

lol it's funny because in that issue of Scientific American that I mentioned, he got a lot of flak from the scientific community.
