Avid. But its rediculous. it's what the Air Force uses for video production. They might have consumer products though. I think they're owned by M-Audio

thanks for the advice guys... I'll probably try each one out and decide from there.
That might be VERY costly...
I highly reccomend Final Cut if you are on a Mac, and would say that it isnt worth it to start learning Avid at this point if you dont know it already... it's on it's way out for many reasons (and runs for shit without the perfect hardware configuration not to mention it's not a very logical interface at all)
If you are going for simple and not a Feature length with lots of rendering to be done you can get Final Cut Express HD (it runs in SD too and its a good stepping into editing intro which will get you ready for final Cut Pro should you wish to upgrade (it's a lot more $$$$ so if you are just starting out you might want to hold off on spending until you are at the point where you know how to use the more advanced features) Let me know if you have any questions....
and as for Sony software.... it's not and won't be something that will be an industry standard so if you are looking to grow in editing etc, you'll end up having to learn Avid or Final Cut anyway...
mike beat me to it... having worked that end of the media spectrum final cut is the way to go imo. granted, it is a mac program but i really don't know any serious people in the business editing on a pc.. in fact i don't any, period.

Yeah, I build and support video editing suites and laptop mobile editing setups for work and we have a fleet of laptops for this purpose, the requests for Final cut laptops is much larger and growing above avid PC laptops... Moving forward I would LOVE to never have to deal with Avid again (as a program and as a company, they are backwards and their support sucks even in the ordering and shipping department which is retarded)
bottom line, if you are indeed serious about this then you'd have to be an ass to invest in anything new on the windows platform... Final Cut is structured into the OS perfectly and there arent a million different configurations or conflicts as far as routing and external hardware goes...
Hooking up a deck or even an external FW drive on a windows/avid machine requires a very specific setup that is limiting to the rest of your system and you have to reboot after plugging new things in half of the time, and then again after capturing in order to view/edit... the list goes on, but essentially unless you like headaches and a pain in the ass don't go there.
