Global Gathering 2004, Long Marston Airfield, UK

OK. The Bedrock Tent...we got there as Digweed was settling to his back to back set with Sasha. Digweed was unflappable. Deep, dark and haunting....the usual John Digweed fayre... Sasha played for a while, the best bits from Fabric compressed into his first hour. It made for a very lively affair, top stuff. But when he came on again after Digweed, he just killed it. Played this hard tune, that he played last week, at a silly speed...the tent just started emptying out. That really killed the Bedrock tent. What a shame. Cattaneo came on, was playing plodding prog, was moving the crowd enough, but he wasn't getting the feedback from the crowd either...the atmosphere in there had pretty much died.

So let's check out the Air tent!

Ali B creating a storm in there, great poppy breaks and beats, just the ticket for a party in a field. Really uplifting loved every minute. Infectious, you just had to move to it. Then watched Freeland's entrance...he had a couple of dancers so we decided to check out the Babooshka tent...woah...what a sound system in there....the place was really live to sound of quality house music. Past the Stongbow Rooms, Medicine 8 were playing some in there again excellent stuff, the place was jumping...walked across to the Bedrock tent...

    ...dead....

...no atmosphere, no vibe...James Zabiela was putting his all behind his set but his sound didn't fit at that time of the night...he was on before Howells and Howells was to be followed by Nick Warren to finish (although Nick didn't make it and Luke Fair was called in last minute). What we needed were MELODIES. we got big ole beats instead. Was the problem the sound system? We ventured back over to the Air tent.

Hybrid...those boys were rocking the place. A great live set full of energy. Got us in the mood for checking out Danny Howells. Back to the Bedrock tent for him...ok we were getting housey Howells, plenty of melody but it was really plodding...it was about 5:15am and we decided we had enough. Bused it back and kipped the night in the tent nearby. Overall dissapointing. I missed Van M, Fortier, Thompson and Lisle, from the Bedrock tent. It was worth going. I experienced dance music in the festival atmosphere, and saw all the other folks and their glow sticks.

A few pics and vids may follow, if i can be bothered

Gutted, shame Sasha cleared the floor. Still i don?t feel so bad for missing it now.

Were the loads of 14yr olds with glowsticks?

Sounds like a big shame ... I'm not a fan of those massive events - prefer the intimacy of a small club myself. Plus Sasha does not seem suited to these things (give him The Bomb/Fabric/Sankeys with a few hundred people and he's out of this world).

Pity Luke Fair cancelled ... I'd wanted to go mainly to check him out Chris Fortier (who both rarely make it to the UK), however it seems that Chris must have played an early set anyway.

Surely its time that a promotor (Bedrock in conjunction with Fade?) ran a UK tour with Fortier,Fair & Porter. Now thats a lineup I'd pay good money to see:wink:.

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

What's the deal with that tune man? first time i heard it i seriously thought he must be taking the piss, it's just fucking crazy, like a speeded up cheesy happy hardcore number, it went down like a concrete ballon at Fabric last week, everybody just stood staring at him in disbelief, and he played it last night as well?

I caught the last 2 hours of sasha and digweed. I'm wishing i'd caught the first 2 now. I couldn't justify seeing them for 4 hours tho at a festival with so much else going on. Sasha really didn't impress me last night, i'd say he was the worst dj i saw all night in fact. Digweed was good though.

Favourite part of the night was probably Nic Fanciulli down on the beach at the start, especially when he suddenly dropped Greece 2000 out of nowhere.

Lawler was absolute quality as well. Saw a bit of Armin and all of Van Dyk, and was sat outside relaxing for Ferry who just played a classics 'producers' set and was actually pretty good.

What i caught of Danny Howells was wicked as well

I didn't spend anywhere near as much time in the Bedrock arena as i planned, but it's a festival so it's always good to get a decent mix.

for me the best dj of the night was carl cox. he absolutely destroyed the techno tent - unbelievebly good!

despite the ack of people + the chilled atmosphere danny howells was excellent - a perfect set which started with really nice funky house tracks and built up into more pumping techno brilliantly.

also caught the first hour of digweed from 10-11 and was really impressed, nice deep and funky progressive house.

all in all had a really good night - only complaint was that volume levels could have been higher

Luke didn't cancel. He closed out the Bedrock tent after Danny Howells. From what I hear his set went well and he was totally blown away by the festival as a whole. One year we must make the trip.
