    This Week's Guest:
Lucas Vickers (Acute Recordings / Higher Funktion)

At a young age Lucas quickly found himself immersed in the world of notes ? one of the few things that could keep his interest. The only music he had access to as a child was classical, upon which he credits his perceptiveness to the musical details that most overlook. At 14, he discovered the electronic genre, and as he walked around the school with his headphones on trying to explain to his friends that life was more interesting with a soundtrack, people rarely understood, and music quickly became the most profound relationship in his life. At 15, Lucas stood hungrily awaiting the arrival of a package of records from Germany. Lacking the right equipment, even with his stereo at full volume, he could barely hear the records. He would sit back at night with his head next to the speaker trying to make out the sounds.
Turntables finally arrived at 17 ? things were never the same.

To expand his musical horizons, Lucas listened to almost everything he could find. Working street promotion teams to learn about the industry, he quickly understood that skill integrated well with whom you knew, so he spent long nights outside clubs handing out flyers and talking to just about anybody about the electronic music world. He found himself hosting a weekly party in New York City and flying to California to work with Giant LA. For a new years party, he helped set up the booth for Danny Howells, Luke Fair, and Mark Farina ? some of his favorite artists.

Lucas took up jazz piano lessons and began to study music theory in order to learn production and further his sets. He started working with Acute Recordings and owner Jason Jollins. Lucas had quite a bit to learn from Jollins, an established NYC DJ, resident at Avalon and Centro-Fly. Lucas began to fly out to California on a regular basis for gigs and events, learning even more about the constantly evolving nature of music and musical tastes. Lucas recently has been put in charge of online distributions for Acute Recordings; yet another piece for his growing resume.

One night, Lucas? world came smashing into the world he?d always dreamed of ? Lucas Vickers actually found himself spinning at NYC?s Arc, in the precise booth in which that Danny Howels, Sander Kleinenberg, The 112 Crew, and many other international DJs spin. He was so tuned into his own sound that day that he couldn?t even understand the people speaking to him ? ?Words were meaningless?. All I understood that night were beats. My friends had to repeat what the sound guy was saying about 5 times before I?d nod my head.? That night set a fire in his eyes, which has been the source of endless inspiration.

Over countless late nights spent sorting through thousands of record samples and falling asleep on keyboards, Lucas desperately sought his own original sound. Along with other DJs, he started up a recurring party in NYC called Prognosis in early 2004. Despite his busy schedule he still makes a point to go out and get inspired by the local and international talent that constantly flows through New York City on a weekly basis.

Lucas? life is almost entirely devoted to his passion. Be careful when asking him questions about music ? chances are he won?t shut up. When he isn?t spinning, he?s listening for new sounds. Even when he?s walking down the street on his own there?s music playing in his head. The daily world is not as much home to him as it used to be, but he would never exchange his realm of experience, ripe with inspiration and creativity. This whole-hearted marriage to music could not help but influence the development of his artistic talents as a DJ. His sound has been a work in progress, and hopefully when he perfects it, we?ll be there to hear it, because it?s guaranteed to be amazing.
