    what programs/software = Luke/Desyn...

    Hello everyone,

Just wonderig if anyone know's what software or similar software do Luke Fair and Desyn use to edit tracks.
They take pretty nice tracks with cheesy vocals and other dumb shite on them and transform them (sometimes very simply) into dope tracks. ??

Just wondering so I can look into those programs and possible purchase and mess with or disect some tracks I need to.

    Thanks!

oK, i'LL look into that one. I'm looking for something that'll remove vocals entirely making the actual track instrumental.

some tascam recorders have a solo button that kills everything but the middle track, works sometimes.

It´s not possible to do that cleanly. EQ´ing will help you here, but it will still be pretty hard to get good sounding results, there´s some programs that can help you with that, but audio technology still hasn´t produced one that can do it perfectly.

For example, if the vocals aren´t in the middle of the stereo field, or if they have too many effects like reverebs or delay thrown in, if many instruments occupy the same frequency range, etc., forget about it.

Anyway, for edits any music program with flexible tools for audio will help. You can go with audio editors like SoundForge, WaveLab or Audacity, but ideally you´d want to have something that makes it easy to re-sequence the stuff after editing : Adobe Audition is a good cross between a sequencer and an audio editor, but the ideal software is something like Acid or Ableton Live, which makes it easy to timestretch stuff, add loops, etc. Cakewalk Sonar is also pretty good with Audio and has an entry level version called Music Creator for 30 bucks. Acid also has a cheap version, if your tight on money.

For audio sequencing and treatment though, the king is still Pro Tools, If you buy M-Audio soundcards you can then buy a cheaper version called Pro Tools M-Powered.

Whew, sorry for the long post hope it helped.

If you really want to get fancy and fork out the cash, you can check out Ableton. I believe Sasha uses a souped up version of this with his live sets as well. It cost about $500, but you'll be able to edit the tracks anyway you want. http://www.ableton.com/

It's true. I've read a couple of interviews where Desyn mentions that he uses Ableton to do edits.

I've done it a million times with tracks! All I use is soundforge. I'm sure there are more complex programs that you can use but I've done the same thing that luke has done... I've taken a track edited out the "1 min long vocal with no beat" and made it about 10 secs and still kept the beat count.

I've used edited tracks in my mixes all the time and they still sound great.

JZ has done Robophobia on Ableton...does that tell you anything. Digweed does his music on Logic. Robbie Rivera uses Logic...as I'm sure a lot of pother producers do too. I'm using Live to do my productions ATM. I wanna get logic for mastering and other plug-ins. Abletons compressors are terrible. They really need a serious multiband compressor in their program.

And BTW, I did purchase Live. It's way better than downloading it off soulseek...plus I bet I got a lot more plug-ins with the full version too.

The "souped-up" thing is a myth. He uses the same version as anyone of us that buys Ableton.

The only thing extra he might have is some plugins, namely Supatrigga for the stutters (not needed anymore with Live5) and an ensemble from Native Instruments´ Electronic Instruments 2 called FastFX.

Yeah, no souped version was exactly what I was going to say. He sure has a souped up controller, but beyond that it's Ableton at it's finest.

Jeffrey, I agree about the included compressors, but honestly, compressors are VST's and the good high end ones are $$$. about as much as abeleton costs itself sometimes...

talked to luke this past weekend and he mentioned using ableton to edit tracks. ricky ryan said he used mostly reason to produce tracks. you can basically use any program to re-edit tracks so long as the ability to stretch the tracks is in the program. i used ableton but got sick of it (not so fond of the interface and not as powerful as cubase sx3). eventually once you have enough knowlege about psychoacoustics and sound synthesis, all the programs become one in the same; it's just a matter of how you use the plug-ins and the program.

Ableton here plus Soundforge to edit and then what seems to be a never ending chain of plug-ins and vst's (waves platinum bundle, izotope ozone, tc works, atmosphere, trilogy, absynth, intakt, etc....). I still use Reason but not nearly as much as Ableton. Again, I've been doing this for awhile now and have put down some serious cash for what I have but the support/updates make it worth purchasing software rather than getting a pirated version which I would never trust nor feel comfortable having on my system.

My opinion and my stance exactly.

I?m not rich and this is just a hobby for me, but it?s a good feeling when you know you?re paying money that will support the development of a great program and a great company, as is the case with Ableton. Through frequenting places like KVR-Audio.com, I?ve learnt how much effort goes into doing this.

Anyway, back to the compressor thing, Live?s aren?t that great, but there?s no need to spend money for some very reasonable VST ones, like digitalfishphones? Endorphin and Blockfish. Google those, they?re awesome and free.
