Re: Sasha these days, what do you think?

Okie dokie. here we go with a real opinion.

----- personally i think the ""hype/un-hype"" comes from a change in what he played. not differring styles , but a change of pacing. he began banging it out more and more, playing higher BPM, more driving tunes. they rocked but they differed from his famous moniker of playing deep, well paced, groovy tracks and getting really emotional. he just moved on for awhile there. his mixing is no longer the wild on the fly creation it was when vinyl and cd's were used. he now has a tool to prepare the mix and personally i think he abandoned the creativity of say, throwing breeder- chain into paragliders- change me, but rather uses structure and tricks more often. (most notable-- the ableton studder mix).

HOWEVER, and a huge however, a few MS folk will back us here. about a month ago, i got a buttload of ppl tickets to the secret party, a small room with 350 ppl and sasha all night... and good lord, sasha reverted and proved to me at least that his legend is stil there. he played this dirty, emotional set with subtle, groovy, atmospheric tracks all over the place, no hands in the air, scream at the top of your lungs tracks, but bouncy, fluuid, close your eyes, smoke a bowl with rubyraks, chill material. his mixing was spot on, like he was sitting in the booth of twilo with 3 channels of vinyl going at once. also, i hear that he has begun pulling back on the peak time stuff in favor of showing off his real talents lately. that talent being the ability to pull two random tracks, and work them together , strip them down, and mangle it up in a better form and have every wide eyed person in the room appreciate it.

one thing i always think of, and because it happened to more than once, is that for awhile there, we stopped hearing about the ""Xperience"" with sasha, the moment in the night where he rips the guts out with a break and ppl start tearing up... but more comments about how he banged the place out. personally i missed the emotion for awhile there... but next friday i get to listen to him and digweed drop choons across the corbar system and get really shitty with some great ppl.
        just my two cents......

I'll withold my opinion until I see him again - he's just announced he's playing here at the begining of June; 2 nights, one small and very expensive, the other outside by the ocean. I think we'll opt for the ocean!!!!

Well, I am not asserting that everyone else agree with me. I am just saying that at least someone out there has the same opinion. Thesightless put it very well. I just miss the good old days when Sasha banged the place out and everyone rocks to his beat.

I can't really comment ... as Sasha appears to be giving the UK a rather wide berth at present. He's listed for a couple of festivals (which he hates playing) and that's it so far. Apparently he fell out with Space ... so that may limit his Ibiza appearances in 2006 (which is a shame beacuse his sets there in 2002, 2003 and 2004 were fantastic). I wouldn't mind catching him in the US ... but would rather that he reverted to vinyl (it was great to read thesightless's review). Sasha's digital sets are, I'm afraid, very hit and miss (great at Fabric and Circus last year ... poor, lazy, uninspiring and rather embarassing at Air). I'll wait to see what 2006 holds - hopefully some magic with the assistance of Charlie May.

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

The only things i've heard from him in 12 months have been Fundacion NYC and his essential mix from maida vale

                          1. Fundacion, as mostly everyone agrees is excellent save for the last 4-5 tracks.

                          2. His EM was mindblowing, I will never get tired of it, too many tunes/moments to list here.

ive just heard him through the sets over the internet, never seen him live... based on this i can say he has lost his magic lately, his GU sets were incredible, if thats what defined him as a dj... he was way better than he es now. But this friday im gonna prove if all this im saying here is true, im gonna see him live along with digweed for the first time in my life at crobar, so probably i will change my point of view and edit this post. (i really hope so)

There a more Sasha mixes that I listen to over an over than any other dj; no one else is even close, actually. They are mixes from throughout the years, but two in particular are his Proton Radio Get Involved set and his Maide Avail Essential Mix, both from last year.

So um yeah, he's still got it.
