PS and Illy can do this...simple but very effective technique but I'll leave it to Dom to explain it. Trace and fade as far as I can tell

That image is has over 40 layers in photoshop. I actually did not use illustrator in this project. I used the adjustment tool to pull the lines out of the image, and I used a paintbrush to get the burn effect.

In regards to tools I use. I use aperture for my photo editing in *.RAW format. Giving me unbelievable control over any picture I take. Simply an amazing program from Apple. Truly like having a print studio but only digital. I have the new CS3 Premium Design Suite which cost me over $1,800. barf. It comes with PS, FL, DW, AI, ID, etc. My weapons of choice are PS and AI. With these two programs I can do everything and anything. It has took me over 10 years to learn these programs but truly there are no limitations in pixel/vector world.

the image below is something I am working for a local restaurant here in town. 4 x 10 feet.

the image below is 1 x 3. it was printed on a photo metallic paper. came out sweet.

second that...I have the same software but am still in the process of mastering what they have to offer . Why did you use the adjustment tool btw...does it give more control over the lines you're pulling out? The burning is cool with the different colours you used by the way.

As I like to work with paths and edit them a lot I usually prefer Illy since it's way easier to do that, PS makes me itchy when it come to using a pathfinder or similar FX. I mainly use PS for alterations on images, illy for creating and tracing stuff.

I like using photoshop for any edits because they still feel like a photo. When you use a photo and " vectorize " it ... there are properties lost in the conversion from pixel to vector. Some of the techniques I use are entirely effective in the pixel world, but when tried in the vector world ... it just does not have the same effect.

Both programs have their limitations. I have pushed the limits of both and been frustrated to learn why one can not do the other. I have also learned things on the way that I can manipulate a program to get a desired effect.
