Oh man. I just stumbled upon this and thought that I'd revive it. DJ Icey and the whole Florida "breaks" scene is fucking ass. Talk about shitty sounds. I can't even believe that they even consider that crap breaks.
I've been listening to dance music now for well over 10 years, yet I don't have the slightest idea what "Florida breaks" are meant to be.
I'm sure I've asked this before, but can someone enlighten me as to what Florida breaks are meant to be? How are they any different to the breaks the rest of the world get?
I betchya if I listen to a Florida breaks set it would contain songs I'd find in a set where normal people wouldn't even come close to classifying it as a Florida breaks set. Why does the Florida breaks pidgeonhole exist, when the current breaks sub-genres probably do more than enough to classify whatever Florida breaks is exactly.
Someone please explain it all to me and put me out of my misery, because I'm sure me and the rest of the world are wondering wtf Florida breaks are.

You see, that is the problem. No one really knows what they are "meant" to be. The sound is basically some faggots getting bleeps and blips off of video games and then using poorly situated and crapily constructed "beats" that you would get from say your Speak & Spell and then you ran it through the wash to get that bullshit, underproduced sound. It's like someone buying a $10 keyboard and comparing it to a Roland. I guess it's just the mentality in that state that these morons think that you can make a $2 song sound as good as any song out there. Yeah right. Give it up people.

As long as it isn't a rebranding of some other sub-genre of breaks, say like funky breaks or something, and labelling it as Florida breaks. Because that would be pointless and then I'd be pissed.

Florida breaks is a genre known to Floridians who grew up listening to local radio stations that would play "plummet" "baby anne" "icey" "r fresh" "jackyl n hyde" the occasional "ritm." The label "florida breaks" was probably coined in a local record store somewhere in central or south fl. like "the drop shop." But thats neither here nor there, point is, its pointless to try and explain the genre to someone who hasnt lived there and heard local radio dj's , etc... regardless, it was a big part of highschool for me, i grad'd in '98.
I saw him quite a few years back, he played some massive breakbeat remixes of classic rock songs, which I found totally unique. I heared a sweet Cars remix and BOC's "Im burning for you". Hes got a creative sound, which I found enjoyable.
I think the BOC one you are thinking of is "don't fear the reaper". That seems to be his signature track.
if you like Icey, check out Baby Anne. She's been around for a long time and cute too boot
"Back in the day" she sucked, I don't know if she has actually gotten better, that girl trainwrecked so many times one night I thought that the tech was dj'ing that night. Sure her cd's might be ok, but anyone can make a ok cd with enough time and no one watching. Cute yes, Dj no. But this was back in 98-99 timeframe

All I know for sure is from personal experience which is that she sounds great if you're a pilled out teenage raver and don't know a thing about what the DJ is doing behind the decks.
just go dude....apparently, i went to go see josh wink, and the reviews of that gig werent too hot, but i had a good time.....it shouldnt be just about if the dj plays to your liking, but the atmosphere and having a good time yourself....fuck it if the dj sucks, just have fun...shouldnt spend your time wondering if it will be worth your time, just do it and make it what you want to make it.......a good time, with good friends
Jesus fuckin' Christ. I know there are many people that feel this way but when I go to a club, I'm a fucking selfish bastard. I went there because I wanted to hear some good fucking tunes all night long so that I can have some goddamned motherfuckin' fun. Fuck hearing shit DJs when you pay ANY money to go out there whether it be directly for entrance or indirectly via paying for the meal prior or gas.
