Music is but one part of our environment, which ultimately influences and controls our upbringings and style, unless you're of the minority and can think outside of the box.

Granted, it's usually a big part of one's environment, so it does have some fairly good influence.

I'll jump on Sean's side; while I don't believe it's in EVERYONE'S case (so I don't stereotype ), I do see it happening with more and more kids, especially with the language. I mean, you don't need to be Ernest freaking Hemingway here, but at least talk like you're SOMEWHAT knowledgable, not like a complete moron.

With many of us, rap & hip-hop used to be nothing but pure quality....the "gangsta" shit wasn't as big, because there wasn't much of it...now it's like mostly that.

It sucks, but hey, another rapper died...like anything in music, there's 100,000 more that can take his place now

The world must be coming to an end. If any of you browse the politics forum you'll know that i'm usually the polar opposite of Sightless, but here I'm gotta agree with him in many ways.

When I was younger and listening to rap and r&b I started to notice differing intelligence levels amoung the different listener groups. Rap unfortunately seemed to be the lowest of the bunch. Now I'm generalizing, there are exceptions but in general this rings true. Anyhow noticing this I forced myself to listen to other styles of music.

At least rap in the earlier days told a story, today its all about bling. That might be its biggest downfall in regards to success of its listeners. Your telling your audience that the 22 inch rims and diamonds are the most important things. That talking and dressing like the artists portray is a good thing, yet in real life you come off looking uneducated. They make it glamourous to be shot (50 cent, etc.), to treat women like shit. Hell, haven't there been recent shootings at award shows among some of the different clicks?

I've always adapted to the idea that if you want to be successful you find a person that is currently there and you do the same thing. You also hang around others that are successful. Applying this model to [most] rap stars might prove fatal.

How many people with 22" rims on their cars do you think have money put aside for retirement? Where do you think the desire to get the rims came from? Not that music should be telling you to invest your money or anything, but it shouldn't cause negative effects on its audience.

Great statement. I saw this the other week and wonder how much they paid for them. The way the guys looked in the car, I will take a wild guess and say the money wasn't spent on education. And lets not forget the gold teeth cause they had plenty of them.

i have a client, who is from brooklyn, and really ghetto. he writes raps for a few NY based rappers, he wrote a few for Jay-Z and other gotti rappers. when JZ took off, his royalty payments were SICKENING> he made about 400K in 6 months. he proceeded to blow it all. now in recent years he has gotten married, and had a kid and has another on the way. needless to say he is happy making 30K a year while trying to support a wife and 2 kids, but what disturbed me most, he went out and bought a brand new M3 with the final money he got from the royalties. so rather then keep that 50K + for his kids, a home, food, clothing for the kids, he dropped it on a new car and rims. his apartment..... its one bedroom and the kids sleep in the same room with the parents. talk about misguided ppl. and sadly, he doesnt give a damn about anything other than ""yo, im looking pimp"""

very true, which is why you have to scope out the good hip hop, if your just not into it thats fine, but theres some excellent stuff out there. If a hip hop head judged electronic music based on paul oakenfold, chemical brothers, and moby then that is not at all a fair representation of electronic music. It all depends on the individuals desire to dig deeper and seek out that quality.

berkeley and oakland does have some quality UnDeRgRounD hip hop but im jsut not down with the whole scene of huge xxxxl t shirts and poor english. i do like my 40oz though

Paul Oakenfold was big into hip-hop before DJing. He even was the one who signed Fresh Prince - DJ Jazzy Jeff and Salt-n-Peppa to their first record deal. Hip Hop was a bit different back then.

Maybe we are just all old and can't keep up with the times.

i downladed some sasha mix from 1989 and theres a definate late 80's hip hop vibe to it, such a sick mix
