Hey guess what... there's oil in Sudan

Nothing's very clear about the situation in Sudan but (although it's The Guardian) this sheds a little light on some of the issues...

"The Sudanese government says that the death toll in Darfur, since the beginning of the conflict in 2003, is not greater than 1,200 on all sides. Why is such attention devoted to Sudan when, in neighbouring Congo, the death rate from the war there is estimated to be some 2 or 3 million?"

Re:: Hey guess what... there's oil in Sudan

Why is there attention on Sudan? From what I recall wasn't there a civil war there that killed millions like Congo? Also, isn't it a hotbed for Islamic terrorists like Bin laden over the years?

And if there is oil there then we should make up something about Sudan having WMD's and invade their country too. I'm tired of paying too much money to fill up my new SUV that requires Premium unleaded.

Re:: Hey guess what... there's oil in Sudan

I already mentioned that in a topic a while ago actually...but since then there hasn't been much talk about it in the news it kinda got lost. I think there's also a pipeline running through Chad to transport that stuff into Cameroon or something, not really sure about that tho...

Anyways, the rebels were also rebelling because the government kept all the oil revenues to itself instead of sharing it with the people...that is in the south, anyway. The north is still unclear, wether it is purely ethnic or also economic.

I'm still trying to find out all the details of this, it's my study (Africa) and even I can't make anything out of it, for fux sake.

Re:: Hey guess what... there's oil in Sudan

I think it is quite alarming that the Congo and Rwanda were quickly forgotten and now Sudan is big news. It could be oil, but it could also isn't there some tiny chance that people in the US are starting to care about atrocities abroad?

            I hope so.

See what the Southern conflict is all about, and partially the one in Darfur, too.

And this is how they did it:

its just that i always hear about there being oil in alaska.
but the govt doesnt want to tap it since the whole state is some special land.
ive heard analysts on cnn talking about alaska, and that there's enough oil to supply our entire country for 'x?x' amount of years.

I believe the reason has something to do with the oil being under a reserve of some kind(wildlife i think) and there is obviously a huge debate from activists about damaging the environment. If I remember correctly there is enough oil there to keep America running for over 100yrs.

For even more than a 100 yrs, but it's not the oil, it's tar-sand/bitumen (or whatever you call that stuff in english), which has to be processed in order to extract the oil. Only problem is that it also involves surface-mining and the extraction process is really polluting. But that sand is enough for another 1600 bln barrels....which is more than all the known reserves in the world today.

By the way: there's a pipeline from Chad to Cameroon, but that has nothing to do with the oil fields in Sudan as far as I can tell.
15% of the American oil imports come from Chad, Nigeria, Angola and other African countries. There ya go.
