    Help with my recordings

Hey all i have a creative audiog nx 2 sound card. I have started converting my lp's into mp3's. But my recordings sound a bit distorted. I am not using soundforge or anything like that t record but the software that came with the card. To me who ever records the kiss fm mixes sound great and i would like to know what voloumes i should have on my laptop etc.

What i am doing currently is.
    1) i have my mixer hooked to my laptop throgh a rca cable which goes from the dj booth out put to the line in in my soundcard. The dj booth voloume is at full
    2) i have my recording button to 60 percent and my line in to 100 percent up.
    3) i am copying the track in wave from at 24 bit sample rate and 44.1 htz or whatever u call it.
    4) i press record on the programe and it records and when i play it back it sound distorted

I am trying to get it to have the same sorta levels as the kiss fm mixes but can't seem to do it. Oh and i copy it in stereo. I actually looked up a kiss fm file while i was playing it through i tunes and when i got the track info it said Channel - stereo. When i do mine it says Channel - Joint stereo. Could that be the difference. Please help someone as i am stuck and ready to do my first mix cd for a long time and want it to sound clear and full. Thanks in advance for any advice

    Re: Help with my recordings

turn your 'line in' on the sound card down. its better to record it low (and boost sound later if too low)

i am not familiar with your sound card so i can not comment on the recording software, but only say that using a program such as Sound Forge gives me a quality recording every time.

you may try turning your mixer volume down too. are you using a 'master out' or a 'record out' on your mixer?

i dont have a sound card other than the stock one in this HP.

sound forge is a program that allows you to record, edit, loop, efx, master all your recordings.
i've been using version 6 since 2002. it has never failed me.

that depends on which cdj you use, and which format you play (audio or mp3)
the naked ear cannot differentiate between constant and variable.
only an engineer will lie and say they can hear it.

no, also turn your record volume down. this may help reduce the hot recording you're experienceing.
using master out is fine just dont bump more than 1 or 2 red lights on your master or you'll get the distortion again.

                  Re: Help with my recordings

i always record on very normal / low levels (certainly no clipping !) when the rip is done i open it in Soundforge and add some plugs into the fxchain (soft hiss and noise removing, compression and limiting the track) till it sounds good and acceptable.

I always save the untouched rip wav and the 'remastered' one sepratly so i can always go back if i need to.

                  over to converting...

i tried converting my vinylrips to mp3's with all sorts of software. (Freeware, simple convertors .. soundforge etc .. ) yet i get the best results with Lame and this using the standard preset, which is variable bitrate. Lame is really small and well documented and gave me the best results.

i think you should definatly check it out

What the hell is fxchain?? Ok here is what i have done. I have used the track beta boy by trentemoller. Cause of the bass line being so fat that could be one reason for the distorsion.
i did a few different setups to c which one works best.
                    1) Record voloume down, Line in up, and master booth (which is what i am using up)
                    2) Line in down and record up booth up
                    3) booth down line down and record up
                    4) booth down line in and record up.

Outta all them number 2 sounded the best but distorted a little and number 3 sounded alright but i felt the voloume could have been raised a little. What i am gonna do now is burn or 4 samples onto disk and play the at work on the stereo. To see which one sounds the best or close to and then i will get rid of the rest and work with one formula. I will also burn the kiss fm cd's on disk and compare sound. Anyone else have any idea on what to do. Thanks Jibgolly and khilla for your help so far. Watch this space and i will let ya know soem results 2moz

                      its ok to record low.
once you have a raw WAV you can dump it in soudforge and "normalize" it to your desired volume.

Oh really. I did not know that. So when u record it fairly low u open soundforge and then what do u do. I have soundforge 6 on my laptop but it looks a bit complicated for me. So u mean u actually turn the voloume up using soundforge??

once the file is open in soundforge click on 'Process' then click normalize.
from there you will adjust the percentage up or down.
try it once or twice and you will get the feel for it.

Jib is right. better low volume raw recording and 'normalize' or 'limit' it later at -0.1Db.

Also soundforge has a built in 'get peak of track' so it kinda sets the max volume to normalize.

fxchain or Effect Chaining (you map the wav signal thru a noise filtering plugin, then thru a compressor/limiter)
