I really dont see a problem with this at all. I think it's great they both can have a converstion like that. An open relationship with the one who brought you into this world; how tight is that. There are other families that dont even speak to each other.

i typed out this long response to your initial post and discarded it. I was saying that its def. a cultural thing, i know a few white ppl who can kick it with their parents like they would a friend. Should try and have dinner with me, my brothers and parents. Imagine 3 bro's in the 23-26 yr range who don't give a shit wether there parents are sitting at the table or not.

imo, the day I become a parent, I will be open to listen to my children but want to make sure that they realize the parent is the boss.

this one guy use to talk about somking weed with his mom. I think that is crossing the line since you are letting your kid know that you accept them doing an illegal act. but that is my opinion.
