Cingular wireless offers bail out on bad dates

Cellphone?s excuses hang up on bad dates

Ever get stuck on a blind date you'd need a blindfold to enjoy?

    No worries.

Cingular Wireless has introduced a new cellphone feature that can rescue you without having to rely on friends who have no idea how truly desperate the situation has become.

The company's Voice Connect package allows subscribers to arrange to be called at a preset time by a computerized voice with an emergency excuse. The voice feeds you one of eight randomly selected lines and you're out the door.

    Awful date over.

``I'd definitely use it,'' said Lauren Aufiero, 21, of Winchester. ``You can't always rely on (friends) to be there for you in the nick of time like that.''

The $4.99-a-month service, which also allows you to dial by voice and program a wake-up call, is being marketed as an indispensible tool in today's perilous dating world.

The escape-a-date feature does all the work for you, as long as you have at least mediocre acting skils. The computerized voice begins the rescue by whispering, ``This is your escape-a-date call. Just repeat after me and you'll be on your way.''

The voice then instructs you to follow one of several preprogrammed scripts.

`` `Oh, man, I totally forgot,' '' one script begins. `` `Yeah, thanks for reminding me. Shoot, I have to get started right away.' Tell them that you have something due tomorrow that you had forgotten about, and you have to go take care of it right now.''

A company spokeswoman acknowledged the service infuses a bit of lighthearted treachery into the dating world, but young customers said they have no qualms about being dishonest if it's going to save them from an atrocious rendezvous.

``It could be very handy,'' said Antonio Ortiz, 20, of Cambridge. ``If a person is being straight-up rude, even if you have to lie to them, it's worth it.''
