Do I need it ?
I LOVE Photography and while I'm still learning the buzz words, I know what feature does what and I feel I'm on the track to doing getting a great hobby out of it.
If it's a hobby (even a great one), you might consider the Digital Rebel. So many good comments on that one, and most people that know a little about photography say it's incredible value for the money and a great choice if you're not sure about blowing a load of cash on some high-end model....I can see you ending up taking really nice pics with either that 30D or the Digital Rebel, really.
$1400 on a camera ? I know a lot of professional photographers on here would but I'm desperately contemplating whether to get the Canon 30D or not and I'm twisted in a knot thinking (its only a CAMERA)
I didn't bother reading the entire thread, but you can get the 30d for about $200 cheaper and that is with the kit. I am planning on buying the same camera in July after I come back from Italy.
2 ways to look at it.
1 - If you are considering buying the camera, then you are getting serious about photography. Go for it.
2 - You could save 200 - 400 bills and go with the 20D. Its only a little over 1 year old and with the extra money you could buy a good lense.
Let me know if you get it.
BTW - Don't get the rebel or the Nikon D70. The 30D is in a class above them IMO.

Kobe, the S is a piece of shit and way too flimsy to drive. No wonder it's so cheap in price (and quality). What does being in a chat room have to do with this? I'm not even home nor logged into SS right now. Before you start waving your meat flaps, start checking your "facts", fatty. I get to test drive cars each week and driving the S was like driving a Miata but slightly less metro. It's no wonder that so many are available in used car lots.

I won't be back until next Tuesday, so if Get Carter is the correct answer, I would appreciate of someone else posts a new cap for me

I took my dad's Digital Rebel XT to Turkey in March for the total eclipse of the sun. I loved it. Although it's heavy to carry around all day, the picture quality was totally worth it. Especially when you're in odd situations, like no flash in the museums and mosques, having a camera that can handle it -- manual settings and quality chip -- was a real bonus.
If you go the Canon route, don't get the basic lenses, splurge on the image stabilized ones. It really makes a difference.

Ive seen photographers take excellent, AMAZING shots with a Digital Rebel ($about 400 or something) and Ive seen mediocre shots taken by full frame digital cameras, let alone a $1400 30D. Full frame by the way cost more than $10K.
So while your camera will help you, it will NOT help you become a better photographer if thats what youre ultimately after. I havent gone thru the entire thread but my advice is to NOT spend that much cash, get either a Digital Rebel or a 20D, and if you have to spend $1400, then use that to buy a 50mm 1.8 or other sick lenses. Lenses are actually what makes a good shot/composition into a memorable one
30D while its a agreat camera, wouldnt be recommended as the first DSLR you get, unless of you like spending money... ;-)
