Linux is a much more stable system but the problem is Windows is much more readily avaliable to people to get. Maybe some day Linux will take over as the number op system. But I don't see it happening any time soon though.Common Sense is not Common at all.Comment

ian. linux is not easy ... esp if you have been in the microsux world for a long time. it's a very slow learning curve, very slow. if you have a dummy box, play on that, do not do it on your main system. you can wipe everything and not even know it. do not give it up, it's actually fun once you get it going. i promise.dead, yet alive.Comment

Microsoft doesn't just want the market share -- they want the leverage it gives it over the consuming public. If MS's market share drops, it loses more than just those raw numbers -- it loses the ability to bully us into using other MS or MS-friendly products, which in turn spurs demand for MS operating systems. Actually as the article says this is for first time PC users in developing countries. First time pc users in developing countries probably have never seen a PC before (taking into consideration they got rather poor education) - image what happens if you give them a Linux box. Exactly, nothing - they won't be able to handle it. XPLite gives them an easy start into the PC world. I have read it got a special localized help system which is called My Support (as far as I can remember) and you do not have to configure anything yourself.The company said the cut-price software was designed for "first-time desktop PC users in developing countries".
If they evolve they can always choose to get Linux or a copy of Windows Server 2003 out on the street.

Actually I would say quite the opposite would happen. If these first time users get a box with Linux on it they will probably end up learning it and will never go to M$. I think this is what M$ is afraid of so they are making this available to these countries. You can already see how capable some countries in Africa are on Linux.
