Re: Digital Rebel XT Experiments - Vol 1. - Caution 56K

duder, I went to Penn Camera (pro shooter store on the outskirts of DC) lens shopping and I spoke to one of their sales guys.

He said the ONLY difference (as I mentioned earlier) is the 30D is only more powerful with a faster shutter speed and a higher ISO (I think as high as 3200 but anything over 800 is not recommended anyways so I dont see the point) and he told me that eventual image qualitywise, both camera's are IDENTICAL.

He said (in his opinion) the 30D would shine for those photographers at Sporting events who needed to take 20 photos in rapid succession.

Save the extra $500, pick up the 350D and get the 17 - 85MM IS Lens, ya wont regret it.

Oh - and I'll post some pictures this evening. It was so frickin sunny / hot on Saturday and I mis-timed my photo session to late afternoon instead of pre-post twilight and totally lucked out on getting good photo's. I'll still post what I caught though.

^^ well they also both use different sensors which is a big factor and as for the iso, I always use ths lowest possible so no difference to me. The one thing that I am picking the 30d is the fact that there is a less introduction of noise at the higher iso settings such as 400 and up. I hate cleanning noise out of pics since IMO takes away from the original shot. Also, the focus is different on both.

Your right on saving the money and spend it on a good lens. The lens is just as important as the camera, but it too me too long to decide on a model and at this point I am not changing it and going with the 30D.

Both of them do a great job. Keep posting some pics!!!!

they dont use different sensors (assume you mean the AF points), 30D just has 9 as opposed to the 7 on the 350D which imo isn't that cruicial a deal esp since you can just reposition the shot to one of the 7 available AF points. but to each his own, let me know what kind of lens you decide to go in for....

            also quoting DPReview

As you can see there's almost no visible difference in noise levels between the EOS 350D and EOS 20D, our measured results (see graph below) show that the 350D's noise levels are very slightly higher between ISO 800 and 1600. Image sharpness is also virtually identical with a slight softening at ISO 800 and 1600 but nothing like the levels we have seen from other cameras.

the sensor size is a hair bigger on the 30D

check out this gallery where I think most of the shots were with a rebel. pretty nice
