    quick windows server question

i know its not supposed to be in this forum, but i need a quick answer.

ok, we normally use novell, so this is new to me. i have set up a workstation to be a application server (windows 2003). and for the workstations in the lab to see or log into that server i had to get these cal licenses. how do i activate them? so that the lab computers will see the server. make sense

pretty sure 2003 server requires a domain... that's why it's "server"

either run dcpromo on the server or from the Server Management wizard add active directory as a roll.
then on the workstations goto system properties in control panel, then the system identification tab, choose
properties & change from workgroup to domain, stick the name of the domain you just setup on your server in & hit ok & it should ask you for a username & password, you need to use the administrators login details from the server to finish the process.

before you start adding the workstations to the domain, make sure all the workstations have their DNS settings pointing to the domain controller otherwise they wont be able to join.

                      thank you venture37
i actually just finished setting up active directory and am waiting for the server to finish updates and reboot. so now i need to get to the workstations and change the domain.

do i have to create logins for each station on the server. the servers only use is an application server. they will log into Novell for thier files etc.. and only the windows box for the application. so no secuirty issues or separte logins will be needed...
                      thanks bud

usually when purchasing win 2003, you request the number of servers / connections that can be made to the OS. A License key is issued accordingly and the number of connections is set when installing the Win 2003 box.

Do you know who purchased it and how many licensed connections were requested ?
