Re: screw iran, this is what we need to worry about.

The way I see it, this is nothing more than North Korea saying "Look at us...we've got them too!!!" Which is really kinda sad if you think about it...keeping up with the Jones'.

And Kamal...the difference is the US doesn't tout having these weapons, and then say that other countries should be "wiped off the map." It all comes down to rationality...who am I going to trust the fate of this world to.....us....or a radical, militant Islamic state?? Not much of a decision, is it??

Re: screw iran, this is what we need to worry about.

North Korea has test-fired at least six missiles, including a long-range Taepodong-2, despite repeated warnings from the international community.

US officials said the Taepodong missile - thought capable of reaching Alaska - failed shortly after take-off, while the others fell into the Sea of Japan.

The US called the tests "provocative" and Japan has announced sanctions.
The UN Security Council is due to hold an emergency meeting later on Wednesday to discuss the developments.

Well, even if NK succeeds in getting the Tae Po Dong operational (blew up after 30 secs after launch), it would take years before they can cook up a nuke to mount on that thing.

Imo it was just monkey see monkey do after Iran gave the finger to the international community in order to get some concessions from the UN...

              and the beat goes on...

North Korea has test-fired a seventh missile amid international furor over the regime's launch of six missiles earlier in the day.

Re: screw iran, this is what we need to worry about.

This recent launch highlights two things, IMO:

                1. N. Korea does not have the technology, on its own, to be a serious threat to the US -- although it is much closer to being a threat to Japan and South Korea. Part of the threat with North Korea, though, is that they would have no qualms with selling a warhead to anyone, so the fact that they may not be able to get a nuke onto US soil with an ICBM doesn't necessarily mean that there is no threat to the US from NK-manufactuered weapons.
                2. The problem with North Korea is not going to go away on its own, and they are going to continue to poke the international community until they either get concessions of some sort or this matures into a real conflict.

I think it would be folly for us to say, "Well, they clearly can't reach us, so let's not worry about it right now." We did that a few years ago and opted to go into Iraq instead, and in the meantime, NK is a step closer to having the ability to land a nuke on our doorstep. The longer we wait to address this problem, the closer they're going to get until one day, we're going to find ourselves staring down a madman that doesn't have the same sense of restraint that keeps the other nuclear powers of the world from actually using the damn things.

Re: screw iran, this is what we need to worry about.

Though the US sees this as a threat, and it is, why else would a country whose entire male population who belongs to the World’s second largest military need a fucking long range ballistic missle???

Anyways, N. Korea has always been the benched bitch there in Asia. All of the surrounding nations have tolerated them and China only because they feel they have to support a fellow communist country. However, remember when the US withdrew to the south of the DMZ after the Korean War? This was only after China stepped in and supported N. Korea; however, the stipulation set by China are that N. Korea must not invade any surrounding countries. N. Korea knows that if they sling any sort of munitions over their borders, they will be on their own, without China’s support.

                  N. Korea is simply complaining b/c they did not get the same deal as Iran did towards domestic nuclear development. So shoot off some missiles to get the worlds’ attention. BTW, what kind of missle program would test 3 types of missiles in just one day? Hot Air if you ask me, but cause for concern in the future.

Absolutely hot air, and more political than actual current threat, no question. I do think, though, that the time to do something about NK -- whatever that "something" may be -- is now rather than months or years from now. We have a lot more options at our disposal now than we might going forward. They probably already have more leverage today than they did a few years ago when it was announced that they had developed nuclear weapons.

Does NK really have the world's second largest military? Didn't know that...

Sorry, I was incorrect. They are 5th. Pretty big military for such a smaller nation:
                      • China – 2,840,000
                      • United States – 1,431,000
                      • Russia – 1,200,000
                      • India – 1,145,000
                      • North Korea 1,055,000

What I find most interesting is how they fired the missiles on the 4th of july and the day the Discovery blasted off. A psychological move by the North Koreans towards America.

They could have fired it on my birthday and there would be no greater impact. I think the media is a injecting that coincident to cause more of a stir.

^^as to the Discovery, perhaps. I doubt that launching them on July 4 was a coincidence, though. KJI is all about head games -- no way was that an accident.

I actually laughed this morning reading this:

"North Korea threatens to test more missles!"

The biggest threat at the moment is Iran. One problem at at time.
