After three years of doing Proton's .AUdio show, it's fair to say there's been some absolutely funktastic sets broadcast from some of the best artists playing the best music at the best parties ...these are a few of my personal favourites - all originals, all high quality and all recorded by me.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2ZLNFODM - James Zabiela - Renaissance, Live at Lot 33 Canberra, June 6 2003
The very first set that I ever recorded, and probably one of the best sets I've ever heard. I drove for 3 hours to catch James during his first visit to Australia and had dragged a group of other music nerds with me. James didn't disappoint - remember the first time you heard and saw James up close? Then you know exactly what I'm talking about!
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CZPO44JP - Scott Oliver - December 2005 Promo
Scott's been a good mate of mine for years now, and is actually my flatmate. It just so happens he's an incredibly good DJ with an ear for quality. Quite different taste to my own, but what he does he does very well indeed - so for lovers of darker, tribally, tech'ed up progressive this is where it's at. Get lost in it.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AC7KDQ7J - Kasey Taylor - 5 Hour Proton Set
Speaking of quality - Kasey Taylor has got to be one of the world's most impressive "progressive" DJs. Even Diggers thinks so; so if you haven't heard this in all its glory then stop reading this and grab it. All 265 minutes of it.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8W2P0JYL - Hybrid - live from Friction at Lot 33, Mar 5 2004
The lads from Hybrid definitely know how to party, and this DJ set caused me no end of dramas to get edited for release so you better fucking like it! They were absolutely on fire that they kept playing overtime - the club security were throwing bottle tops at them to finally wrap it up, but they weren't having a bar of it. One of the best dancefloor nights of my life; no question. Take a listen and you'll understand why... the last half hour is especially good!
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C1R6E5VR - Anthony Pappa - live at Sweetchilli, July 16 2004
By special request, another Australian DJ with an ear for quality. Anthony was on fire at Sweetchilli that night... it was a hedonistic night (as Chilli often is) so I was sure pleased to have something to remember it by afterwards, other than the pounding headache.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O4FXF0WZ - Robbie Lowe - live at Turnmills, Sept 16 2005
Robbie Lowe is a Sydney institution, and a good mate of mine. We went on holiday in Europe and Japan last year and this set is the fruits of that period. If there's someone out there who consistently pushes all the right musical buttons for me; it's Robbie. A total champ.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=19NZ6DEL - Habersham and Numinous - live at Sunny, May 14 2005
Definitely one for those who are still partying on a Sunday afternoon, wondering how the fuck they're going to pull it all together to get to work in under 18 hours. The answer is: you're not going to pull it all together, but it's sets like these that make you not care one little bit. Dirty, druggy and a total head-fuck from a night at what is arguably Australia's best party series from Melbourne - Sunny. The lads totally turned my head inside out that night... I hope it does the same for you.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=87AAOQUL - Justin & Piero - live at Sweetchilli, May 28 2004
Two lads who no longer play together, but when they did they would always turn out the goods with a diverse range of tech house, progressive and more traditional house-flavours. Whack this on to warm up your Friday night before heading out on the town, or equally as good being played loud and proud in the car with the sunroof open. Another excellent night at Sweetchilli captured for you to enjoy.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VEOCTEK1 - Dave Seaman - Live At Space, Sydney Nov 1st 2003
Mr Party Pants himself - Dave Seaman. This was a big night at a big club, and I think it's probably the single most popular set from .AUdio from pre-2006. If you haven't had a chance to get a copy before.. well, what are you waiting for?!
It's fun to do this.. it's like browsing through an ever-so-slightly tattered photo album, and coming across those little gems that sprinkle the memory dust evenly across your loungeroom speakers. Yeehah.
Special thanks must go out to all the artists who have been kind enough to share their music with me, and the rest of us - too many of you to list here, but goodonya! From my perspective, there's a whole bunch of promoters who have been really cool about some twerp coming in and fucking around with their gear. Sweetchilli, Sounds, Musica, Sunny, Friction and a whole stack of others - thanks.
I hope you guys enjoy the material - spread it around, and catch .AUdio coming at you this week with two more exclusive sets. It'll be Tiefschwarz live from We Love Sounds, and Daniel Stubbs who's another close mate of mine whose musical taste and ear for the most intricate detail continues to impress me.
Dig it.
