lots. They have set up "cooling centers" for people that have to get out of the heat and have nowhere to go all over the city. I actually felt a bit bad yesterday when I saw many of my neighbors sweltering outside of their homes while I grabbed my gear to head for a hotel -- every hotel for a 100 mile radius is booked now.

Yesterday was ridiculous, but the good news is that we have a bit of a repreive from the heat today -- high of 88 (heat index of 98 ) with thunderstorms -- so the folks that have safely made it to this point are probably in the clear.

Any photos of the massive tree in your backyard? Thankfully it didnt come through the garage roof when it landed.

^^my wife took some, but we have no power (read: no computer) at home (and won't for a few days), so we haven't been able to get the photos off the camera and uploaded somewhere. I'll be sure to post them once we get our power restored.

            This blows, Pt. II

Following up on my recent thread here, the hits in St. Louis keep on coming. Signs of progress were out there in getting back on our feet after Wednesday night's storm. Power was slowly being restored and, on a personal note, I had a hotel lined up for tonight to stay out of the heat.

In what can only be described as a kick straight in the balls, another storm has passed through the area, knocking out power to another 200,000 households. It actually hit the areas that were more or less spared on Wednesday. In what can only be described as tragic irony, though, the hotel I was supposed to stay in is amongst the buildings that are now without power and a/c. Unbefuckinglievable. Out of the frying pan, into the frying pan.

Oh well. At least I got to sleep in the a/c last night (hotel), which puts me in rare company in this city right now. Keeping it all in perspective, though, this is minor inconvenience compared to what happened to the folks that had to deal with Katrina last year.

blame youself. you moved to a region that usually has silly heat waves.

i live on the beach, if my house gets flooded. its my fault for moving within 100 of the water.

if anything, use it as an excuse to take a little vacation from the office.

^^Unfortunately, the office is the only place I'm aware of that has a/c right now, so it's better than pretty much any other option I could come up with. I am heading to Sacramento for a wedding tomorrow morning, so I at least get to get out of dodge for a couple of days...

                          pretty much.

or count yourself lucky that you don't live in any one of a hundred places in the world that would gladly trade place4s with you on your worst day (like Darfur or the folks who lost their homes in the Pakistani earthquake for instance)

You have check in to a hotel because you need air con to sleep when it's 18c or 65f at night? Thats weak.

Well, we were getting a room not just because of the heat, but also because there's still no electricity, and sitting in your home in the dark is a bit of a drag no matter what the temperature. The heat is a serious thing, though -- last night the heat index was 103 degrees at 10 pm, and "plummeted" to 94 degrees by 3 am. Looks like its supposed to be cooler tonight thanks to the storm we had earlier today, but the point is that when you are willing to pay for a place because it has electricity, it sucks in a royal way to have that place lose power, too. Leaves you with a bit of a helpless feeling.
