    Stomp

Went to see STOMP tonight and it was without any doubt the best performance I've been to in years! For those who've never heard of them, a quick copy paste from their website:

What does the word STOMP make you think of?

Music, Dance, Theatre, Choreography or Performance Art? All of the above! Or is it none of the above. Well, both are sort of right...In a way. Confused? read on...

STOMP is a movement, of bodies, objects, sounds - even abstract ideas. But what makes it so appealing is that the cast uses everyday objects, but in non-traditional ways.

There's no speech, no dialogue, not even a plot.

So why go see STOMP? Well, have you ever composed a symphony using only matchbooks as instruments? Or created a dance routine based around sweeping? You may have done this a little, but get a group of rhythmically gifted, extremely coordinated bodies with definitive personalities, and you have the makings for STOMP.
The performance they bombard the audience with is simply stunning. I thought I was going to see a bunch of people beating the shit out of garbage bins, but it was far more than that. First of all, the garbage bins are only one single "instrument" they play. Brooms, pipes, rims, plastic bags, pots, pans, cardboard cups, a banana peel (I kid you not), ... you name it and they use it as a percussion instrument. At a certain moment, they even come on stage with kitchen sinks chained to their necks... and they play them like steel drums

But it's not only music either. If it was, I would've called it a concert, not a performance. Choreography and dance are essential parts too and spice up the entire experience. They pull the craziest stuff (attaching themselves to a rope and swinging from one side of the stage to the other in order to reach the specific rim or pot they need) without even the slightest glitch in the rythm...

Their attitude was what surprised me the most. When you see the merchandising, you get the impression that these guys and girls are tough as nails and that the macho attitude seeps off the stage during the show. Wrong. Humor and (self)mockey are the common ingredients in all their "acts". And they bring that across without even saying a word.

If they're performing anywhere near you, make sure you don't miss their show. You won't be disappointed!

Still sceptical? Watch this (pole act from their most recent show): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vptiD8wnUq8

Yea "Stomp" always scared me for some reason. I had a chance to catch "Stomp" at the theater at the foot of the Acropolis a couple of years ago and choose not to go. Somehow it just didn't seem right.

Too bad you didn't see them years ago. Much better show with more energy and guys that were really into it. You can tell the newer kids that have filled in are not as entertaining and aren't into it for the same things. You'd be better off going to go see Recycled Percussion instead. Much better shows.

Sounds like the exact same show I saw 8 or so years ago. It was really great, but suprised they havent' changed it up, you know, added a frying pan or something to the routine.

I saw them about 4 years ago and had front row seats. It was a helluva show.

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."
