My New Apartment at OSU

So...after 5 years of work, I'm going back to Ohio State University for grad school. As part of my financial package, I received free off-campus living paid for by the university. Only thing is they get to pick the location. I figured that with OSU in charge, it will be something decent and relatively safe. They come back and give me this place on the far east side of Columbus next to a crappy area known as Whitehall. I looked up the crime reports via the Columbus Police Department and came up with this:

7/23/2006 discharged firearm - occupied structure 5632 Hibernia Dr. "C"
7/22/2006 armed robbery in parking lot 5751 Hibernia Dr.
7/11/2006 criminal damaging - shot out patio door 5572 Hibernia Dr. Apt A
7/6/2006 apartment robbery 5632 Hibernia Dr.
7/5/2006 identity theft 5591 Hibernia Dr. Apt. A
7/1/2006 car winshield destroyed 5624 Hibernia Dr. Apt C
7/1/2006 car theft - in parking lot - stereo 5624 Hibernia Dr.
7/1/2006 car theft - in parking lot - stereo 5645 Hibernia Dr. Apt. A

All of this occurred directly IN the apartment complex - Hibernia Dr. is a dead end and nothing is there but the apartments. The reports are quite a detailed and interesting read. Bullets through apartment walls on July 23rd. Some guy gets a gun in his face in the parking lot and wallet taken on the 22nd. Glass patio door shot through on July 11th. Door busted down and apartment robbed on June 10th. Woman attacked right outside her place on May 20th. 14 car jackings in under 4 months.

So I'm a bit concerned at this point. Crime activity looks nowhere close in my current apartment at Indianapolis, and I know that there are lots of better places in Columbus. I'm preparing a letter back to OSU telling them to either get me another place or else to take their fucking "award" back and shove it...beyond ridiculous. Too bad that they caught me and I turned down other financial offers at other schools to come here...

So...what do you think? am I overreacting? Would you live here? Is this a reward or a punishment??

yikes... my car got broken into first weekend after i moved to south Austin. nice little welcome to the neighborhood hazing i figured. i have not searched for crime reports in my area tho. don't know if i want to as i just renewed the lease for six months...

what type of lease? if you get friendly with the peeps in housing you might be able to swap for a different area or find out if there are any better. got a detachable face car stereo--use it.

to be honest tho miroslav, your probably better there than some places on south campus, espcially by the gateway, ohio state could have put at a much worse spot, where exactly are you gonna be at? broad street whitehall or main street whitehall?

Yep. Could they have found a WORSE location? Besides the crime, that place is WAY out on the east side of the metro area...OSU is a bit north/northwest of downtown. It would be a 30-40 minute freeway treck there every morning. As if there weren't tons of similarly priced apartments on the northwest side, where it's only 10-15 minutes...and much safer...

Fortunately for me, I haven't signed a lease...and I don't intend to! The unfortunate part is that I may have to now pay my own housing. We'll see what OSU says to my letter...
