Bay Area [ms]ers, I'm on the way!

Just landed a 3 month job in Berkeley starting in september and I'm quite pumped about it. Now begins the dreaded apartment hunt. Anyone have any leads in either SF or Berkeley? I'm considering Emeryville or Oakland too, but I don't know a damn thing about either of them, so advice would be appreciated. No craigslist suggestions, I'm already working on it, just thought I'd see if you guys had any other ideas.

Either way, looking forward to some big nights in SF!

Oakland is ghetto and SF is expensive but you can sort out gems in the midst of it all... Emeryville is hicksville.

Re: Bay Area [ms]ers, I'm on the way!

Here. They have plenty of apartments. Month to month leases. Moderately cheap rent, for san fran at least. A balcony. A 10 minute walk to bart. Problem is that its smack in the center of chinatown but if you are only going to be here for a few months it would be tolerable.....maybe.

Other than that the market in the city is beyond ridiculous right now. There are sooo many people and sooo few apartments. Rent is through the motherfucking roof. I just moved last week from the sunset to north beach and it took forever to find this place..... almost 3 months. We've gone to open houses with 50+ people waiting in line.... credit reports in hand.... ready to kiss the landlords ass on more than one occasion. Its a bad scene. So on such short notice I probably wouldn't advise trying to get a place in the city unless you are feeling the mandarin tower.

Emeryville has some ok areas and I'm sure you could probably find something easily there. Oakland has some super cheap places and I'm sure you could get a place there but its ghetto as fuck. Berkeley is cool...well would be for a few months, with school starting up it might be tough to get your own place but I'm sure there are some strays with extra rooms looking to pick up another roomate. Send me a pm if you have any more specific questions and I'll do what I can.

      godspeed.

its gonna be shit hard to find a place in berkeley right now becasue of the upcoming school year at ucb. but you can find deals, it took my buddies and i 2 solid months of diligent criagslist searching to find out house. but we got it, right near bart, a house, garage and 525 for rent. to be honest any appartent in berkeley is proably gonna be a dorm house...hot girls but equaly lame bros. good luck though, holler at me, ill show you the spots to eat and get a drink. and and alegence to any previous baseball team shall not be mentioned, go a's

there are gentrafied areas of oakland, that are nice, i grew up in one, i would know. temiscal, grand, and montclair(where i grew up) are very white neighborhoods

Re: Bay Area [ms]ers, I'm on the way!

Cheers, thanks for the info guys!

From searching craigslist so far, it seems like there's quite a bit out there in the city in my price range. I understand the insanity of the market out there right now, but I'm wondering if the situation is the same considering my circumstances. (ie: not looking for long term, low expectations aside from quick access to the job via BART [no car], no pets, no furniture, etc)

Now whether any of these pan out is a different story altogether and you guys obviously know more about it than I do. I know there are a ton of people out there ready and willing to rent out an underused bedroom to help cover their rent. The people I've spoken to at the company I'm working for said the majority live in SF and commute. As much as I despise, say a 1 hour commute from the mission, I'm willing to do it, as the city is much more my speed than Berkeley.

Anyway, I'll let you all know how it goes. If any of you hear of anything, let me know asap.

Palmer, just checked out the Mandarin. That may be something worth considering. I actually turned down an offer from a firm in the financial district, that would've been perfect for that one.

Oakland is ghetto? That's like saying San Francisco is ghetto due to the Tenderloin. Parts of Oakland are very, very nice: Piedmont Avenue, Lakeshore & Grand, Rockridge, Montclaire, Oakland Hills. Oakland is also usually much less expensive than Berk.

As far as Berkeley goes, I prefer the North Berkeley area, but if you're into a more Haight-Ashbury vibe, the Telegraph area may be more to your liking.
