I fear that someone who is so far gone from reality really could be dangerous. Glad to hear that his wife is staying with her parents...can you imagine how he might react if she angrily confronted him about such an obsession? It's not certain that he would react rationally or safely...
For this reason, I wouldn't recommend you going it along and confronting him about it. Also, letting the cat out of the bag on this also impacts others as well. It probably needs to be a joint intervention thing involving his wife, family, and with guidance of a professional. Else, who knows where it might lead him...
This level of obsession is way over the top.The time he would have had to put into that audio! This is not something that can be dealt by well meaning friends. His wife needs to speak to a professional NOW!!

His wife needs to speak with him directly. They are married and need to communicate with each other first. if that doesn't work, then get professional help. But for her to be seeking help from one of his friends shows that there are more problems already besides the shrine. Just my 2 cents

i assume you are pretty close to the guy since his wife called you. yeah, that audio montage is weird, but i think the 100s of unmailed hand-written letters is even more strange. has he not even picked up any hints that something is wrong? the fact that his wife is staying at her parents should be a sure sign. the fact that you are avoiding him now... it should be obvious.

Well, officially I'm not avoiding him and his wife went to her parents for the weekend (not unusual) and is back. Another non-partial therapist said the same thing our friend who is a therapist said, that no matter how weird we think it is, in their professional opinion it's a non threating fantasy and that we shouldn't say anything and let it run it's course. Again, this is because they have a healthy sex life, no money or previous trust issues etc... I don't know what to think other than I really don't want to think about it.. make sense? I told her she should get a key for the room and start removing things... like one picture or one letter to see if he notices and/or just to drive him nuts....
