Read "The Art of Listening" not exactly what I had in mind, as its all about therapy, but thats my fault for not investigating better...still a fun read. Fromm has a great writing style, very interesting, thanks for the recom.

It was fun while it lasted...

Fabric of the Cosmos, is another title by Brian Greene which is worth looking at aswell. I haven't read it yet... but seems interesting.

I'd recommend watching the 3 hour doco before commencing the book, not as a replacement for the knowledge, but as a good "kick start" for the ideas presented. They're pretty out there, and getting a general run down of the theorectical framework can help understand the detailed explanation in the book.

I found Fabric of the Cosmos much more interesting than The Elegant Universe. I would recommend reading it first because it's more general, and covers quantum mechanics, general relativity, space and time, over a book just about string theory. Both require a lot of thinking, neither one is a light read.

If you want to read books against string theory, try Not Even Wrong by Peter Woit, or The Trouble With Physics, by Lee Smolin. Both are new and are getting decent reviews. I haven't read either, yet.

pdowney. I can't comment on Fabric of the Cosmos, but... The Elegant Universe covers quantam mechanics, special/general relativity, and space and time. There's no doubt it gives you an entry level understanding of these so you can properly understand string theory. General relativity and space/time is extremely interesting. That one unusual property of light is still doing my head in. However, I've found quantam mechanics very hard to grasp.
