It's great to talk about not hating the whole nation of Iran because of their leader, but the point of your comment withers quickly when you look at the reality of the situation. Whether we hate Iran as a nation or not is one thing...but the real point is: do we take action, or do we just sit around and hope for the best?

If we take action against Iran, it will be perceived as "hating" that nation by most everybody. If we don't take action, we then take the gamble of: (1) a brilliant but Hitler-esque and power-hunger leader with his finger on the nuke button and (2) possible proliferation of nuke technology to other terrorist entities that have it in for the US and the West.

Thanks to our continuous technological enhancement, nuclear weapons can now be quite portable, even to the size of a large suitcase. How else do you think terrorists are going to get nuclear weapons? They're going to get them through nations like Iran and North Korea. How do you feel about another 9/11 involving a couple of nuclear weapons?

This is why I think the world is going to have to take action against Iran and North Korea. There is enough evidence there to suggest that we can't just sit around and hope that they have the best of intentions.

maybe it has more to do with the militant groups acting freely within a nation, having no one stop them internally? i.e. hamas getting elected and continuing its actions, hezzbollah being funded by iran and syria allowing free reign as well on top of lebanon letting them take hold of the south. maybe pakistans connections with al queada hiding bin laden with ZERO police work being done in the one area they think he is in b/c the ppl there support him? or the tamil tigers saying they wont stop until they get thier way?

No doubt the issues are complicated. Unfortunately, our president continually struggles to appear as though he has truly considered all of the implications of his actions. The world is watching the United States, our president, and his administration's handling of these important times. When he comes across with a smirk on his face, this sends a bad message. When he flippantly spoke about the Hezbollah issue with Tony Blair for the whole world to see, it sent a bad message. This country, even with all its power, wealth, and influence, needs to handle its affairs with dignity. I agree that the United States plays a difficult role in the world's politics. It is very popular to criticize each and every action we take. Americans get frustrated with this. If we could only get a president that could communicate our ideas to the world in a credible way......

well i probably dont have all the nessecary information about the whole conflict and the possible ways of acting if iran's leader keeps with this process but if there's a way that the leadership of iran will suffer but it's people won't then i think thats a solution ill highly embrace.

i hope iran have also other opinions among their politicians and i pray fort the day mr. ahmedinjad will be powerless and with no control at all

Re: Why do people hate Iran and North Korea?

Iran and North Korea are huge threats. I was lucky enough to go to the DMZ area this summer with my dad. I can tell you, looking from atop a hill in South Korea over to North Korea, you could see the difference and it literally got me teary eyed. It was so dismal, so empty, so supressed. The fruit is ripening. Syria/Iran in the middle east with the ability to take out Europe. Venezuela to aid in destroying the states. North Korea to destroy the Pacific Rim (aside from China cause they pretty much run the same type of government as Russia). We should be shaking because they literally have the strategic placements to decimate the most powerful nations. My predictions are Russia, China, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Venezuela vs. the world.
Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so.

                quote]

                I'll tell you what dig72...

I always find it cute when people like you who live in nations that clearly benefit from democracy and capitalism jump on the bandwagon to sympathize with nations that are fundamentally opposed to those principles and are also more brutal and less restrained than the US.

How has Iran affected the world? In what way?

I don't hate Iran nor do I hate North Korea and I'm pretty sure that many millions around the globe who aren't victims of Fox news, will also feel the same way.

I know nothing about these people and I also know that you can't force democarcy onto nations that are not ready for it yet.

Dialogue and communication is what's needed. Calling entire nations evil or the axis of evil and continually threatening to bomb them will not win the hearts and minds of citizens of those nations.

The US is the laughing stock of the world at the moment. The leader of Iran is clearly ontop of the nuclear debate right now. He has clearly stated that Iran has the right under international law to generate and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. And rightly so imo.

The response of the US is that of sanctions and the usual threat of military action.

It's no wonder that more and more people from around the globe are telling the US to go and f**k itself. They are no longer afraid anymore.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”

Re: Why do people hate Iran and North Korea?

I respect your right to your opinion, dig72...of course, I'm still gonna spout off on why I vehemently disagree I don't at all mean any of this against you personally...this is just my $.02...

I guess I should start by correcting myself. Iran has not yet really "affected the world". Just wait until they get their nuclear missiles...

I worry about the world being too lenient on nations like Iran and North Korea. I think Ahmadinejad is very grateful for the prevalence of your opinions, because they are exactly what will enable him to get the nuclear weapons he seeks. Then again, it's not the first time this has happened...just look how well the attempted appeasement of Hitler in the 1930s worked out.

I also really worry about the prospect of nations that tie their politics to religious extremism getting their hands on nuclear weapons. The leaders of other nuclear powers don't go around saying things like this:

"Anyone who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury."

"Iran is ready to transfer nuclear know-how to the Islamic countries due to their need."

"Many are sowing the seeds of defeat and despair in this all-out war between the Islamic world and the Infidel Front, hoping to dishearten the Islamic world. Such people are using words like "it's not possible". They say how could we have a world without America and Zionism? But you know well that this slogan and goal can be achieved and can definitely be realised."

Of course, Ahmadinejad intersperses his threats with his promises that Iran means no harm and that their nuclear program is peaceful...and if you really believe that, I have some ocean-front property in Arizona I want to sell to you real cheap

And I'm sorry to say it, but negotiations and dialogue won't do jack. There is nothing to negotiate really because Iran will not stop their development of nuclear weapons. "Negotiations" will just buy Iran the time they need to get what they want.

I just hope that once Ahmadinejad does get his nukes thanks to these "negotiations" and starts spreading the know-how to other Islamic extremist groups, that someone in this world finally grows some fucking balls (looks like the UN won't) and joins America in standing up to Iran and other Islamic extremist groups out there and sending them the clear message that if they pull that nuclear trigger for the sake of any of their extremist agendas, we will respond in kind and end them. I worry about our future in the coming decades.

a big problem is ppl like dig who dont change thier tune until its too late. they think iran wont or doesnt have/use large scale weapons until they actually do. i'll err on the side of caution and tell annan to actually make use of that nice waste of funding called the UN and stop this shit now. these countries all tell us no no no, while never letting anyone else see the ''no no no''. i ask WHY? if you answer with the word pride or rights, then no other country should abide by the standards and customs that more than half the planet agrees on. so let us here in the US make more and more nukes and it will escalate to a point where everyone in north america thanks whatever god they worship that we are surrounded by two oceans.

Re: Why do people hate Iran and North Korea?

                      OK, everybody please read this:

This is a neat opinion article on why the current UN Security Council approach on Iran is misguided. This guy says it correctly. This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about...

And now, if you don't mind, I'm going to rant for a bit

After Iran clearly snubs the Aug. 31st deadline, which the UN sternly set down as one that would bear consequences, Kofi Annan personally goes to Iran to suck Ahmadinejad's dick... PLEASE. That's PATHETIC!!!

And now, of course, after all the tough UN talk, Russia and China will lead the retreat on ANY possibility of punitive measures against Iran. We need to wait...we don't want to be too hasty! We need to study the situation some more...sanctions could hurt us...Iran might cry... PLEASE! will someone in the international scene grow some balls already? Why don't we just make it easier for Iran and roll over and play dead? I bet even they didn't expect the rest of us to be such pussies.

The UN Security Council is proving itself to be completely impotent. Once Iran gets nuclear weapons, Kofi might as well go look for another job because that whole organization will be dead from a credibility standpoint.

Re: Why do people hate Iran and North Korea?

Oh, I couldn't resist...have to lay down this lengthy quote from the article, because it perfectly sums up why Iran + bomb = bad:

"Whether a nation possesses nuclear weapons is not always a political catastrophe. That Israel has such an arsenal has surely rendered another regional war similar to those of 1948, 1956, 1967 or 1973 unviable. That both India and Pakistan have the bomb is better than only one of them being in that position, and conflict was more likely when each enjoyed only conventional military muscle. The thought of the crackpot regime in North Korea being a member of the atomic club does not lift the heart, but it dare not dream of deploying such weapons without the blessing of Beijing, which would not be forthcoming. There is an extent to which nuclear missiles are little more than a national virility symbol, the military version of counterfeit Viagra.

Yet Iran is different, which is why a collapse in resolve towards Tehran really matters.

Iran is a special case because, first, it is already an established menace. It has spent the past two decades consistently seeking to sabotage any prospect of a permanent peace settlement between Israel and its neighbours and it remains dedicated to that mission. It continues to sponsor extremist fanatics in the Palestinian Authority and Lebanon. It is behind much of the trouble that has tortured Iraq and it does not intend to stop pulling these strings once US and British troops have left. If it becomes a nuclear nation, it is likely to be emboldened in these deeds.

Iran is also distinct because this project is not merely about national symbolism, but also religious aspirations. It would not be an “Islamic” bomb but a “Shia Islamic” bomb, the most potent physical representation so far of a drive to seize command over a faith that was briefly, if tenuously, held and then lost in the 7th century. It would be in the hands of people whose interpretation of theology places a weight and value on the concept of martyrdom that the rest of us properly find alien, bizarre and chilling.

Sunni nations, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, would, rightly, be aghast at, and uncomfortable with, the notion that they have to rely on Israel as their de facto nuclear deterrent. The incentives for them, too, to pursue nuclear status would be overwhelming. Indeed, to put it bluntly, if Tehran obtains nuclear standing, then tacitly encouraging Cairo and Riyadh to travel down the same path may be the least bad outcome for outsiders to fall back on.

An Iranian nuclear capacity would, finally, make a mockery of the United Nations. It would be seen as confirmation that the phrase “Security Council ultimatum” is close to a contradiction in terms. I am not a huge fan of this organisation, but it undoubtedly has its merits. It will be seen as having huffed and puffed on Iran and blown nothing down. Other rogue states will observe these events and reach their own, rational, conclusions. What passes for international order will be deeply undermined by this imminent debacle."
