On Saturday 9th September at 2am, Carl Cox is bringing his award-winning radio show, Carl Cox Global, to Kiss FM, as he spearheads the station’s re-launch in September. This is all part of a plan that will ‘…build on Kiss’ incredible heritage’, in the words of its managing director, Bill Griffin. Presumably that means a move away from the low-rent R’n’B that can be found on the station in so many of its prime time slots; Kiss was the station that (whilst a pirate) bought dance music to the masses, but since it became a legal broadcaster it’s suffered more and more from embracing commercial concerns and placing them over a coherent music policy. So that’s more Javine and less Bushwacka!... or so it was until recently.
Now, however, it seems that the powers that be at Kiss have realised that Capital can handle the pop music, so a few new ideas are finally drawing breath. Andy Roberts, the Group Programme Director of the expanded Kiss network - who is responsible for the new sound of the station – comments, ‘It's important that Kiss constantly evolves. I've already refreshed the music policy, providing a more optimistic and upbeat promise to the listener along with a new selection of presenters and specialist DJ's to come.’
So, on that hopeful note, they’ve got Cox’s own show, Carl Cox Global, on the airwaves from the 9th of September. For the uninitiated - which might not be many of you, he’s pulling down two million listeners every weekend – the show is made up of four parts. In the first, Global Warmer, Coxy gives us his biggest tune of the week. Pretty simple, but let’s be honest, don’t you want to know what’s floating his polished dome ever week? Then we get onto Global Lowdown; a special mix from Carl reflecting the music of a certain label or producer. Buzzin’ Fly and the International Deejay Gigolos are just some of the labels coming up soon. The penultimate part of the show is Global Alliance; a 30 minute guest mix from one of Carl’s many DJ mates; you know, Todd Terry, Laurent Garnier, just some of the lads, you know… And finally, the show finishes off with Going Global; a studio or live mix, taken from highlights of a recent set from Carl’s international jaunts - which have recently included Miami's WMC, Global Gathering, the Cannes Film Festival, Dance Valley, Coachella and of course his residency at Space in Ibiza.
Kiss FM becoming listenable again? Well, it would take a bit of techno to do it… nice one Carl!
